How to use 77mm variable ND filter. Life-hack inside

 *Important Update.
I bought 77mm variable ND filter and can’t place it in this mate-box because adapting ring has the same diameter as a filter and I can’t screw the filter into the ring. I found a great solution/life-hack. Take any cheap uv-filter with the same thread as a filter, remove the glass part and screw in your Variable filter into this filter. And you will have a perfect Match (see attached video)

The best mattebox ever! There are several reasons:
1- mattebox Installs without any additional mount directly on the lens;
2- The ability to use round filters In addition to 4x5,6 filter
3- super light weight

Near perfect lightweight matte box

Having used uber expensive matte boxes from Arri and Oconner I can understand why they cost so much, but like many others I'm still bemused when I see prices for what are considered budget matte boxes. I was making a small run and gun rig, and just wanted the most basic matte box, I rely on screw on filters, so options for drop ins would just be a bonus. I looked at the new $100 options and the materials used looked cheap and nasty, and was about to bite the bullet until I came across this, and having been very impressed with the brand before I made an impulse purchase.

For the price I could not be happier, they could easily have charged twice if not thrice the price and I would feel it fair. it's extremely well built but super super light. The included accessories, I was honestly surprised about at this price point, seriously the matte box alone is well worth the cost of entry. Not important, but the packaging is great too.

Is it perfect? No, the major downside is the way the box tightens onto the lens ring, it's such a small knob and it can be hard to get a tight fit, they ideally should have used a lever/clamp solution, or just a knob that is easier to grip. This complaint only applies to the clip on option, which most will use in Gimbal/Drone situations, and it's fine. Otherwise I would recommend trying to use the rod options for a more secure fit. It's not as if the box will fall off in clip-on mode, it's just more likely to rotate and slip. I'm tempted to drill small holes into the lens ring, or jerry rig some other option.

But for the price, this is a seriously great option, you can even use a drop in filter, bonus!

Best Value for Blackmagic Camera and Sigma Lens

The Tilta Matte Box is a steal for the quality and adaptability.

I use it on a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (Also fits 6K) with Sigma 18-35 1.8 and 50-100 1.8 Art Lenses.

This build quality is very solid and professional. This is great especially for compact and mobile setups, in my video you can see how easy it is to adapt to your lens straight from the box. Just pick the right adapter, or mount it onto 15mm rods.

It can take all sorts of filters, standard mattes and also circular filters on the outside. There are additional adapters you can buy from Tilta, but I did not need any of them.

The large French Flag is great for protecting the lens too or blocking sun, and has a switch to lock it in place. My only con for this review is that I wish there were side flags or barn doors available.

Quality built mini mattebox for run and gun.

I did a YouTube video on this mattebox. For the price, the build quality is well done. Features a mix of metal and modeled plastic build. Offers 2 cold shoe slots for accessories which is a plus.
Downsides are that it only has 1 filter slot a 4x5.65 which is a standard size but it is held in by a little peg.
Overall, for a run and gun set up or on a gimbal this is a great mattebox to use. Its small size makes it super easy to travel with. Very good value for the money.

Works well, can produce some vignetting on full frame cameras in 24mm-28mm range

I like how it looks on my camera, and allows me to drop in a ND filter over the front of my camera lens. 4x6" glass ND filters WILL fit into this, they just stick over the edge a little and do not lock. So I'd recommend adding a little gaffer tape to the edge to secure the ND filter. Though I'm not too worried about it falling out.

Haven't really tested to see how it cuts flares yet.

Great for 4x5.65" ND filters

This is a great Matte Box, and it's well priced! I definitely recommend, I honestly can't think of any downsides to this accessory.

What pushed me to finally buy it was the support for 4x5.65 ND filters. I finally wanted to switch from circular one mm size filters to "multi lens support" filters. As the Matte Box easily fits my small and big mm lenses!

Solid

Loving it, works great with my Sigma Art lense 25-105mm, and looks good on Ursa Mini Pro. It is very lightweight and has lots of mounting options for additional accessories to be mounted to it.

Cutest matte box I own

This matte box is great if you only need 1 filter holder. The Smallrig matte box is great for 2 filters. And I use my Wooden Camera Zip matte box when I need 3 filters. Overall, very happy with all 3 matte boxes and of course this one is just the cutest.

Fantastic quality and build.

Fantastic quality and build. Perfect size for the run and gun videographer. Really like the variety of ring sizes. Also it’s made with precision and very light weight.

Question & Answer

Question :

Bmpcc4k with mft lenses? what does this offer vs using it without matte box?

Answer :

A mattebox offers a lighting control solution that you may be unaware of? Matteboxes may be the demand of those using lights that may interfere with the camera’s ability to asjust for abrupt or incidental lighting. If you are not lighting scenes or people then you may not determine if its something you may take advantage of? The same goes for follow focus; if you are on autofocus then its not needed. A bigger mattebox allows for filters and gradients, again its on the user’s workflow.

Question :

Anyone have experience adapting a 95mm lens to this matte box with the step up or down adaptor? i bought a rehoused sigma art lens 18-35.

Answer :

You will need a 95mm to 85mm Step Down Ring, but there will likely be some vignetting!

Question :

Anyone else having an issue with4x5.65 filters? my nisi filters are so tight, i feel like i'm forcing them in. i hope it's a one off problem

Answer :

Hi, the fit of the 4x5.65 filters are designed to lock in tight. Most Nisi filters are about 4mm thick, so anything above this or at this will be extremely snug.

Question :

Which is the size of the filters that fit?

Answer :

The front of the matte box fits 1 4x5.65 filter however, it is also compatible with screw on filters!

Question :

What's the max and min thickness should the ND filter be to correctly fit onto the matte box? Are all 4x5.65 inch filters the same thickness?

Answer :

You can use up to 4mm thickness filters.

Question :

Will this fit a 86mm lens diameter? In its base setting?

Answer :

Not sure, you may call tilta and ask or see specs.

Question :

How would I attach this to a 35mm lens or even a 135mm lens?

Answer :

You have to go by the diameter of the lens, not how long the lens is. The largest diameter ring is 82mm. I hope this answers your question, good luck.

Question :

Does it come with the polarizer / anti reflection glass? If not where can I get it?

Answer :

It does not come with a polarizer, any screw in filters or 4x5.65 filters work, many people enjoy tiffen products if you're looking for somewhere to start

Question :

2 of my most used lenses are 52 & 58 mm, do you sell one of each size to fill the gap all the way to the size of tighten? i guess it ir 85mm?

Answer :

There are adaptors for all sizes. The Tilta comes with some but not all. I had a 58-77 from another camera and it fits well.

Question :

is there a threat to mount 82mm filters on front of matte box? I have 72mm lense but am using 82mm filters, can I mount filters to front of box?

Answer :

Unfortunately the lens adapters only support filters that are the same size as the lens! You would need to use a 72mm to 82mm Step Up Ring
