I bought a single-hand strap for my DSLR and the base plate is plastic and a little too long (covers the battery door), plus a little unstable once stacked on a tripod shoe. This combines the shoe with a narrower base to allow battery access and is metal so a little less scary holding up my camera. Plus it adds another threaded hole closer to the combined balance point for camera+lens, if i wanted to (for example) switch to a quick strap, etc. Fits well, looks good, seems to work.
