Installation is a breeze. Just hook up the cable to both units and enable networking in accordance with the instructions. You have the ability to name both units, share transducers, share GPS inputs, and (most importantly) share routes, waypoints, and data between the unit. The real way to use this is to find the cover/structure you are looking for at the drivers console using side imaging, mark the location, then use the downscan from the front unit to pinpoint the structure you found and fish it. The ability to share data and inputs to both units is incredibly useful. This product was easy to install and the units recognized the changes immediately. Question: Will the humminbird 720073 5 ethernet cable connect an 1197 and an 898 Answer: Yes it will work but you have to update the 1197 with the latest software and contact hummingbird for software for the 898 that is compatible. They will send it to you for free, it is not on their web page. The 898 can not have the latest software or you will not be able to share with each other.   Question: Can this cable be used to connect two ethernet compatible units, or do I need additional cables/ adapters? Answer: Jay, The cable number and picture do not match. The 720073-2 AS EC 10E cable has to threaded connections that will connect between 2 Ethernet compatible systems or from one system to a network box. I can't talk to older versions of Humminbird systems. In my case I have a newer bow mounted 999 SI CS HD, a Minn Kota GPS controlled trolling motor and a console mounted 798 all connected to a network box.
