Simple...and "Easy to use"!
Style: L-308X-U Flashmate | Verified Purchase
Being a Professional Photographer, I am very particular about how thing add up. I have been a photographer for more years than I can remember (Almost) but I decided to finally buy a "Simple and Accurate" light meter. It dose not matter what type of subjects you care to shoot, I assure you that this all the light meter you need!!! This meter will do what ever you want to do. I use all manual flash units, because I want each light to stay where I set it. Light is cumulative, so if you set up "EACH LIGHT" to do a specific thing, and you are using several lights, you need to know what each light is adding to the scene, and then you need to know what "ALL THE LIGHTS" are doing to complete the final shot. This meter is not only easy to use, it is very accurate and makes the entire shoot go "EXTREMELY FAST"!!!

As I get older...time becomes more important, and this wonderful little meter really is "THE TICKET" for me. I will say that I also got a grip, or cover, for mine that is red in color and soft to the touch. I think the cover (Or Grip...As Amazon calls it) was over priced, however I wanted one, so what can I say. OH WELL!!!

If you want to meter for incident light, ambient light, or for flash, then you will love this meter.
Take it from me, (Mr. Picky) this is all the meter you will "EVER NEED"..."NO MATTER WHAT YOU SHOOT"!!!

Hope you take stock in what I have said, because I took the time to write this "FOR YOU"!

Thanks,
Shooter Boone.

Reliable and Accurate

While some have stated that the unit feels cheap, and I can understand what they are saying, it is very lightweight. I see that as a benefit and for the work I do that feature is greatly appreciated. It is accurate, easy to program and adjust as needed. The only issue I have is that the Lumidisc is not included with the light meter, it is a separate purchase for around $30.00.

Easy to operate, provides accurate readings.

The Sekonic L-308X-U Flashmate Light Meter performed as advertised. Taking readings is easy, and exposures were right on the mark. I used a Mamiya RB67, totally manual camera, and I was able to get perfect exposures at a variety of shutter speeds and aperture readings. I would highly recommend this meter for photography that requires precise readings.

Caroline......the light....

I was concerned on the price at first, but after using this light meter the very first time I felt much better. What I am say is no more 5 or 6 shots testing for the right exposure or heading into a photo editing to fix it. I am able to properly expose right away and minimize the retouching process. Definitely an affordable tool for your kit.

It does the job.

I should have bought this years ago. I'm now able to dial my camera settings in quicker and not take multiple shots trying to find the right setting.

Suits my need just fine

I have an old film camera, and it has metered not only accurately, but well beyond my expections. I can use a synch cord to link to my studio strobe through the port on the front, and it performs well. I don't see the need to buy the more expensive model unless you need to meter a mountain, or are doing a lot of video. Even when I am shooting cityscape, and am across the street, I can meter similar area on my side of the street and do very well without having to walk across the street of meter the front of every building. Note that you can also set this to half and 1/3 stops as well, although this is not the default. Page 15 and then 31 of the manual tell you how to do this, how to get into custom functions, and then what do set them at, respectively.

Crazy easy to use

Great tool! I'm not at the level where I need a meter with major bells and whistles, so this is perfect. This meter does its job with simplistic handling, quick and great for set up multiple lights. If you question the light and you will if you take photos this is a great tool. I don't really use it outside but in studio, wow! Nice...

Very useful and perfect exposure every time

Very useful and perfect exposure every time. I am very happy with the product and pleased I didn't have to spend a fortune to get a reliable meter.

Compact

I have big hands, so this is a very compact device which I can easily drop if I'm not careful. Good thing it comes with a long strap that I can hang around my neck. I keep it with me whenever I'm with camera. It's indispensable for use getting the right amount of light with my strobes without a lot of guessing and test shots.

Quick scan of directions, easy to use basics right out of box with added battery. Has other capabilities that will require study plus an added accessory. Would recommend for amateurs. Professionals may want next level up.

Custom Questions & answers

Question:Is this as flimsy and inaccurate as some reviews say?
Answer:No, the L-308 is a very accurate natural light and flash meter, easy to use once you understand the basic functions. This is the main meter, that my college supplies our photo students. Now, the bad, it is not an Abrams's tank. Keep it away from kids, pets, and in-laws, and don't tie to the bumper of your Ford F-150 you are good. Any meter, is subject to damage from misuse, just hang it around your neck, you are good.

Question:Does the L-308X-U have the ability to display the flash to ambient ration?
Answer:No it does not. I believe the L-358, 558 and 608 will.

Question:What is the temperature operating range
Answer:0 to 40 degrees C.

Question:What is the difference between l-308x and l-308x-u ?

Question:What's included in the box?
Answer:As I recall - there's the Sekonic, a long neck strap, black vinyl carrying pouch and instructions. And I battery, I think

Question:is this light meter go for video metering also
Answer:Yes. If your camera have options like shutter-speed range, aperture and ISO.

Question:What meter for landscape photography ?
Answer:Most accurate would be incident metering tough this relies on you being able to meter at lighting similar to your subject. If this is not possible (uneven clouds, shadows, fog, etc), use reflective metering which is how 99% of cameras meter. This meter will do both.

Answer:It does have a place for one.

Question:Does it measure led lux?
Answer:This light meter will measure ambient and natural light.
