Good plug - wrong NexStar

This is a quality cable, with the seldom seen "Locking Style" coaxial power plug at the telescope end. Celestron lists it as the power chord for the NexStar, among others.

Sadly, while it "fits", the NexStar's Jack is not the correct mate to this plug, and it fails to engage the "Lock" - which is the main feature this cable promises. The lock is needed on the NexStar otherwise power will drop out intermittently as the telescope moves in RA.

It was necessary to replace the power jack in the NexStar, with a longer (deeper) variation before the lock engages. Once done, it's beautiful, and power is steady under all conditions with this cable.

I'm happy to have done this, and rate the purchase highly - but it wouldn't be fair to do so without setting expectations a bit. Now you know -

Great cable. Note that mine (ordered January 2015) *does* include a red LED power light. The top review on the product indicates that buyer received a cable that did *not* have one and I believe this would be a really significant drawback. Otherwise, the cable is fine and probably plenty long to reach a car and have room for your telescope to slew round and round a few times.

I am using this with a JNC300XL external jump-start battery and very happy with that setup. The Celestron powertank looks like a fine product, though it strikes me as possibly overpriced. The JNC300XL + this cable is a bit more expensive, but I find that external, portable jump-start battery (or a similar one) a more flexible option for jump-starting a car and I was pleased to learn that it has a cigarette lighter behind its bulb.

I suspect this cable should be compatible with just about any external battery that has a 12v accessory power hookup, but it's working great with my battery for my Celestron Nextstar 6SE.

Great item

Great item and as described. Easily able to power my telescope out in the field with this adapter. Has a very long cord and when paired with crocodile clips it makes it easy to use a 12v car battery. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JB57H8M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

A much better resource for powering your Celestron Nexstar scope than using eight short-lived AA batteries.

I bought this charger for our Celestron Nexstar 5 computer-guided scope. We bought it to plus into a 12-volt portable battery; the telescope eats AA batteries at an incredible rate — eight at a time!

We have only used this adapter once, and it did keep the scope powered for an entire evening of astronomy.... and the 12-volt portable battery still registered "full" at the end of the evening. By contrast, we would have gone through at least two sets of AA batteries. That's a huge nuisance, because if you have to change batteries, you have to re-calibrate the Nexstar all over again, which is a nuisance.

Just what I needed for my Celestron AVX

Works on my Celestron Advanced VX. I bought a used AVX mount for my telescope. The adapter the user delivered with the scope didn't have the screw on tip so it was easily knocked out with the slightest bump, forcing me to power it on and realign it. This adapter screws onto the existing AVX power port. It's nice a snug. No more accidental shutdowns.

Long lead perfect reach your telescope!

Excellent! Fits perfect, durable metal fitting, and an appreciable long length to stretch from the back of my SUV to my telescope for viewing.

Power your telescope mount from your car

If you travel with your telescope to different viewing locations you may want to buy one of these. i use my scope at different locations and my computerized mount uses 8 batteries to power itself. I bought this dc adapter to use instead of batteries. It has a really long cable so you can plug into your car and be a distance away from it to power your scope.
Works with specific Celestron Computerized mounts so check to see if it will work with yours before buying it

Really hard to mess this up

You can't mess up a simple thing like a DC to DC cable. Even if you mess up every piece of software you make.

Question & Answer

Question :

Does this thread to the recepticle on the mount?

Answer :

I bought this cable 5 years ago, so mine is an older version that doesn't have that metal knurled ring with the internal threads on the 5.5 mm DC plug. I did take a look at my scope's DC power jack, however, and concluded that the newer cable wouldn't do me any good anyway, since there's barely a single thread protruding above the hex nut that secures the jack to the base of my CPC 925. I suppose it's possible that I could disassemble the mount and see if there are any washers behind the power jack that could be removed to allow more threads to protrude, allowing the new cable style to be locked in securely. On the other hand, I could simply keep doing what I've always done...just loop the cable through the handle on the nearest fork arm into a loose knot to provide a strain-relief (see my answer to "What to do to keep it from falling out when plugged in?" for more detail)

Question :

What to do to keep it from falling out when plugged in?

Answer :

I use this cord on a CPC 925, which has a big handle on the fork arm nearest to the DC power jack. I simply loop the cord through this handle in a loose knot, leaving enough cable length to plug in the connector while still leaving a bit of slack. This way, if I forget to turn on the anti-cordwrap or if the cable snags on something while the scope is slewing, the strain relief at the handle will prevent the plug from pulling out and killing the alignment.

Question :

Does this have a level-shifter built in to ensure 12v output? Or is it 12v-ish, passing through whatever the car puts out?

Answer :

Its puts out what the car puts out. It would be nice if it had level shifting

Question :

Can this recharge my celestron powertank from a car? https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/b01g7j097q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=utf8&th=1

Answer :

Absolutely not! The supplied AC adapter/charger provides the correct 16V and current limitations. Hooking the Powertank to a running car engine can cause the Powertank to explode.

Question :

Will this work for everyone ?

Answer :

It will work for anyone who:
1. has access to a vehicle with a 12-volt system and an auxiliary power (lighter) receptacle or a Celestron Power Tank
2. has access to a Celestron telescope with a 12-volt drive system.

It can also be used as a dog leash in a pinch.

Question :

No one seems to have an idea if this can handle 5A current..anyone?

Answer :

No

Question :

This is the same cable that comes with the celestron powertank 12? i need this cable to use the powertank with my nextstar se8?

Answer :

Yes it will work just plug it in and off you go.

Question :

Starry night software download code not working?

Answer :

This device has nothing to do with Starry Night. It only supplies power to your telescope. If this device isn't working I would expect to see other indications... like no lights on the hand controller.

Question :

dose this have the fuse and led in the lighter plug?

Answer :

Yes. Mine does.

Question :

Does this cable work with a nextstar gps from 2003?

Answer :

I have a Nexstar 130SLT purchased at about that time. It works fine and the cable is much longer than the original (which I found right after I bought the replacement).
