Godox 860iii Hotshoe Lock and modeling lamp some of the best upgrades to this model.

Godox V860iii Review

The Godox V860iii is one of the best on-camera flashes I’ve used, so let’s jump right into this review!

I’ve owned the V860ii for a few years now, but honestly, it sat in my drawer because I’m an off-camera flash guy. I always use the Godox AD400 or AD600 Pro and really didn’t have much use for an on-camera flash. After seeing the new V860iii flash and starting to shoot more nightclub pictures, I knew I needed to try something new. When I received the V860iii, I immediately noticed the stellar build quality.

The unit turns on instantly with no wait time, which is a plus when you’re trying to conserve battery when not in use. However, there are two ways to charge the battery. You can either charge it in the docking station, which is provided for you, or you can charge it while the battery is attached to the unit. The battery life is decent, and if you’re not shooting at full power, this will last a while. If you decide to use it at full power, you’ll get around 475 flashes or “pops.” The battery also has a quick release, making it easier to change out your battery, if needed. The recycling time is fast (1.5sec) at full power, especially if you’re in HSS at 1/8000sec. There are also a few accessories included in the box, including a small, over the flash diffuser and 12 gels.

Now, let’s really dive into what makes this flash so awesome. If you are familiar with Godox triggers, the menu set-up is the same, making it easy to navigate. The TTL function works great if you’re in a pinch, while the TCM function allows you to fine tune your TTL values on the fly. You can control your other Godox flashes right from this unit if you don’t have your Godox trigger with you, or you can use it as a standalone unit off-camera with a Godox flash trigger for some off-camera flash action. If you do decide to use this flash off-camera, you’ll need to get a Godox trigger and Godox S bracket so you can put this unit in a soft box, as seen in the pictures below. For low-light situations or evening shooting, you can get away with using this flash by itself, as this new version includes a modeling lamp. This allows whatever camera you are using to focus better. Another feature I like, and it may sound not like a big deal, is the placement of the on/off switch and how it toggles on/off. However, my most favorite feature of the V860iii is the hot shoe mount locking mechanism. With this, I know my flash is locked on the hot shoe, and it’s not coming off. The V860iii has a TTL/M switch on the side if you want to manually switch it, but you can also change it with the back dials, which is my preference. I personally leave the switch on TTL. You can also use this light in high speed sync (HSS), meaning this flash will fire above your camera’s sync speed of 1/200sec. Note, this is only for semi-pro and pro cameras or mirrorless.

At this point in this review I haven't found any dislikes about this unit yet.

In conclusion, if you’re in the market for a portable and versatile flash, this unit is for you. Overall, I highly recommend the Godox V860iii flash.

Excellent versatility! 100% recommended!

I have a studio flash which I really like, but sometimes it is difficult for me to transport it because of its size and weight when I am working alone, so I needed a device with good characteristics and portable. One of the features I was looking for the most was high speed sync. The truth is that I really liked this Godox and it meets my expectations. The other great feature it has that I really like is the battery that replaces AA batteries. That is a big plus! I use it with the Godox X-Pro S controller and it is a great kit. I'm seriously thinking about selling my Neewer brand studio flash and buying a Godox to complement this rig. Great investment. Highly recommended. I share some photos taken in HSS 1/2000, 1/4000 and 1/8000 with a lantern diffuser and at 1/2 and 1/4 of its maximum power. I hope this data helps you.

Great for Sony a7iii

It works good for Sony a7iii, the AF leds works good in low light. I would recommend buying this flash instead of the sony ones or Godox V1.
This new flash (Godox V860iii) has the same power as the Godox V1, BUT it works so much better in low light. I hate Sony flashes they are too expensive and don’t have enough power for low light.

Many upgrades from the previous version!!! Can't go wrong with this speedlight!!!

As a freelance photographer, I wear many hats that usually test my equipment to the max. This Godox V860III has met my expectations.
During evening parties, the front-facing modeling light helped a ton. Able to dial the intensity of the modeling lamp aid throughout the night. I used to feel uncomfortable with my V860II on the hotshoe but not anymore. This quick release lock gives me the reassurance that it's locked onto the camera safely when shooting.
This speedlight also works well with my other Godox flashes. With the 2.4Ghz wireless tech, I can still trigger them all without lag. This speedlight is capable of multiple tasks. Switching modes on the fly like Manual, TTL and multi-flash makes it so versatile.
This battery lasts longer than the previous one for sure. I can definitely recall shooting half to quarter power for 600-750 shots.
This flash doesn't leave the camera now. It was well worth the purchase!!!

Perfect for a full-time photographer

I had a few cheaper flashes that I've been using for years (about $40 per). Those got the job done but once I upgraded to the sony A1 camera with electronic shutter I needed an updated flash. Those cheap flashes would only work with a mechanical shutter and not with the electronic one.

At first V860II caught my attention but then I noticed the new version came out. I bought this flash because newer is always better, right? LOL

Anywho, I already used this flash at 5 photoshoots and couldn't be happier. It is carrying a hefty price tag but in return I am getting a reliable flash offering:

1) rechargable battery instead of wasting 4 AA batteries

2) working ability with the electronic shutter

3) the ability to be a receiving and transmitting flash

Overall, professional, reliable and versatile flash for someone who takes photography more than a hobby.

Perfect for my camera

This flash is definitely expensive but turned out to be an amazing all-around work-horse flash. I am team sony and it was important I upgrade and get a flash that can read the settings on my camera.

This flash does. It is made of plastic and feels a bit cheap but what's inside it makes the flash worth it. I love the fact it has a battery and can act as a transmitter and receiver.

Also, I am a magmod user and bought a few diffusers from that company to put on top of the flash. The flash becomes loose under the weight of the diffuser. Be aware of that (see pics attached).

Overall, this is an amazing flash and is a match for it's price. I am really happy I upgraded and already put it through intensive tests which the flash passed with flying colors.

Better than leading camera brand version.

Love this thing. Would have been great if they made this when I just started out event photography. The battery solution is better than your typical AA battery. Powerfully bright and lightweight to carry around for hours of shooting. Godox is doing a great job with their product.
This is my setup with the soft diffusion attached.

Quick and Bright

Very easy to use and only took me about 2 minutes to make my product pictures so much better. I put one picture of a film camera in the photos of this review. The lock for the hot shoe is a game changer, since its so quick to release I can swap it out with my mic for video work for products. The model light is very useful for setting focus in very low light situations and the battery has lasted much longer than I needed for my sessions.

Work as expected

I already have 3 of these speedlites, and I needed one more for rim lighting. Godox works as expected.
