Rarely see movies made like this anymore! If your Nostalgic about the Holiday, then its a great one to see!

Reading all the reviews surprised me. Clearly there is an odd level of dysfunction among Movie Watchers! Lol...well Some were offended by the dysfunctionality of this exaggerated version of a Families Holiday Dysfunction, which if your honest you know at some level we all have our own in real life. So this made me wonder, "you gave it a bad review, it was horrible and DYSFUNCTIONAL" yet you still DID Watch the Movie! Yes it was full of "Over the Top Family Dysfunction" you watched enough of it in fact to know it was not "worth wasting time on"... yet STILL DID. Not sure about everyone, but I always watch the Review before a Movie and I'm always glad there is one, because it usually determines if this is "my" kind of movie. This Movie had a Great Review so it shouldn't have been a surprise that what you saw was a lot of Family Holiday Dysfunction, well because as the Review dictates, that is exactly the POINT of this lovely Movie! I honestly believe those who watched the movie, then gave it a bad review fall into one of two categories (my opinion) #1. They can not deal with reality and possibly have much WORSE Dysfunction than this innocent "coming of age, feeling of home, yet Full of Family Holiday Dysfunction!. Or, #2. deep down inside its easier to watch OTHERS dysfunction, so that YOURS doesn't look & feel quite so bad after all and can write, " they are really messed up"! One Star! Horrible! Hahahhaha...as for me, I loved it & watched it intently because I needed all the laughs that each character brought out and all the tears too. Its Entertainment, and that's what I love. Sure it was a little "catchy" in some parts but I LOVED all the CLOSE UPS, the acting was so real and the feeling so genuine that you really felt "in the moment' right along with the characters. We rarely get to see movies made like this anymore. So in essence if your Nostalgic about the Holidays and you want to see a really well acted movie, and as an ADDED Perk, look into the "baby blues" of Dylan McDermott, freeze frame for as long as possible. then if nothing else. its worth watching! :) This movie made me feel like Bring on the Holidays! As hectic and busy as they are, but what would we be doing otherwise? I seriously felt like I was wrapped in a warm blanket watching this movie, the house, the lighting .the snow and how it FELT like the Holidays. I identified most with the Mother AND the Daughter. I felt so amazingly close to those two characters played by Ann Bancroft and Holly Hunter. Yes, its a feel good and I found myself laughing at the fact that we were all once at every stage of life these characters are all in during this movie. Also, how the Holidays can bring out the Worst and Best in us all. But in the end, just like that comfy blanket or you favorite slippers or smell of coffee, its comforting and reminds you that through it all, until the bitter end, we are FAMILY. Wow, when the father was looking back on the videos in the basement and when Holly Hunter was leaving her parents side, and he said "Look how perfect she is, we made that'! I realized I say and do the exact same things! Yes, I Loved it, I watched it all and I give It 5 Stars for the 5 Awesome Stars in it and Directed by! Well deserved! ** Note..Please watch the review first and be honest and don't watch it just to say its a horrible movie...because it really isn't. It was acted out by seasoned actors who have gone on to have great careers and you can see why, they capture the heart of the moment. But if you really cant find a good reason to watch it, just Fast Forward towards the end and you will see so much of Dylan McDermott that it will make every moment of dysfunction & then it will feel worth it. Loved it and will probably watch it every year before Thanksgiving... just to get that Holiday Spirits Sparked up.

Not Over-the-Top Dysfunctional at All

I've loved this movie ever since I saw it at the theater, and I don't find this family over-the-top dysfunctional at all. An older sibling who's more uptight than the others isn't at all unusual. A father who has problems coping with a son's gay marriage isn't unusual. The aunt might be something of an exaggeration, but I wouldn't classify anything else as over-the-top. This is a heart-warming look at Thanksgiving, a holiday that tends to bring out family tensions more than any other for some reason. Robert Downey Jr. is great, as always, as is Holly Hunter. Charles Durning and Anne Bancroft are wonderful as the parents. I watch this on Thanksgiving every year, which happens to be today. I'm going to watch it now, and I'm sure I'll enjoy as much as I always do.

This is the best!

This movie is fantastic! Those whining that it’s not good obviously don’t know good cinema. This is an honest portrait of a real family during the holidays. It’s one of my favorite movies that I watch every year. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it!

A masterpiece

From the range of these reviews, it seems like people are watching two different movies. Well, throw the 1 star review people together with the 5 star people and you can approximate the disparity between these characters in one family. I think this movie epitomizes real families. The exaggeration of dysfunction is for emphasis and comedic effect, and I think it's perfectly done. Genius performances across the board, and so many poignant, tender, and sometimes heart wrenching moments. I watch this movie every few years, and I always find something new. Years ago, I identified with the daughters. Now I identify with the mothers. This film makes me laugh hysterically, shake my head in awe of the performances, and cry cathartically. Beautiful.

Great movie but never free at Amazon. The real Scrooges.

It is one of my husband’s and my favorite holiday movies, specifically Thanksgiving. This is a classic. And if it’s not it should be. Characters are all cast perfectly! It’s a delight and takes you back to those miserable Thanksgiving meals when you were forced to commune with certain family members you would rather have not seen. Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr., Charles Durning, Ann Bancroft and even Steve Guttenberg are just brilliant. That said, it is hard to find this movie to watch without having to pay a rental fee. Amazon usually charges for this and ANY GOOD MOVIE. Ho humbug! Five stars for the movie itself and one star for Amazon’s cheapskate attitude! Seriously anyone who’s already paying for Amazon prime should get this and any other holiday movie for free.

it you have any depth, watch it...

Loved it...felt every single one of them, felt their dissapointment, their love, their ability to live one day at a time....and in the face of knowing exactly what they were getting into, went home anyway. There is intense meaning in every moment of each character. There is no dysfunction, it is their reality, it is the outcome of all these lives lived, and being lived in one holiday with all thier history and deep knowing of one another.....all the way to Anne Bancroft looking in the mirror at her body, and wondering "how did I get here?" Thru it all they grab hold of that time, in that house, and know when it all comes down to it that is the bottom line. Whether youre in a brick cracker box house, or a mid century on the beach in Malibu...it is all the same. We do the best we can, and the best we can do is stop beating ourselves up for not living up to a commercial that does not exist. The magic is in the nano seconds of feeling the "real" of one another, and still sticking together on an emotional level, fighting or not, beautiful or not. Thats where all the beauty lies anyway...so I can watch it again, and again. Really, these are all five star actors...i an look at Holly, Robert, Mr. McDermet forever.... and if I had my life to do over, I would make sure I played Mrs. Robinson....she was gorgeous, and so everything in that part.

Wonderful movie, captured such truth on how things can be within family life, especially among the holiday seasons. Excellent acting from everyone and excellent choice of casting for the characters! Thoroughly enjoyed this film in every way... the relationship between her and her brother is special. Overall, a story not to be taken lightly or for granted.

ONE OF THE BEST FILMS ABOUT THANKSGIVING OF ALL TIME!

INCREDIBLE film about Thanksgiving and an annual viewing of this film is a requirement in my household! JODIE FOSTER directs- many, many great & gifted actors.. and this film tells the truth about the concept of "family" and I think it isn't as popular as it should be because it strikes a nerve in many people who don't want to face those truths. We visit family out of nostalgia and tradition... but we LIVE with those we love.

Hilarious Thanksgiving Family Film

Couldn't possibly say enough good things about this film! it's about imperfection and love. it's about family dysfunction and joy through the pain. It's an adorable, heartwarming, family film. With spectacular performances by every member of the cast. Truly a laugh out loud joy to watch.
