Cheap PAR Meter Trick

You can use this Lux meter as a PAR meter for certain lights. Just take the lux reading and for each of the light types listed multiply by the corresponding number :

3000k white LEDs - multiply by 0.023
3500k white LEDs - multiply by 0.022
4000k white LEDs - multiply by 0.024
5000k white LEDs - multiply by 0.02
Metal Halide - multiply by 0.023
High Pressure Sodium - multiply by 0.026

Sorry if your spectrum isn't covered, also this does not work with blurple lights, sorry.

Also this only works up to about 900-1000 par.

It works

What is there to say? It works, it's fairly inexpensive and it has a little bit more features than the average one in the price range. It has helped me correctly place my lights, I was worried I was giving my plants too much light and this helped me figure out correct placement on them. I am no seeing better growth since I was able to increase the LUX with out going too high.

Eliminates guess work

Excellent switch actuation, and good LCD resolution. Overall good quality. The swivel light receiver is nice but not many people probably use this feature. They could lower the cost a couple sheckles if they designed out the swivel light cup.

Meter has good response but I'm not sure of the accuracy without having it calibrated. I think it is accurate enough for my purposes. I do know it has taken the guess work out of setting a light source to "object" distance.

Excellent low-cost photometer

Great for measuring relative brightness of light sources. Swiveling head allows pointing at light source and still being able to read LCD screen. Has a backlight for low-light use. Easy to use controls although the instructions and not wonderful, and contain some errors. Cannot speak for accuracy as that would require a calibrated reference source, which I do not have, but the reading ARE consistent.

Perfect for your production bag

Measures lux/footcandls/ And ambient temperature. Works very well with quick response times. Comes with a soft case that is fine. I calibrated to a Minolta light meter and readings are dead on. Would definitely recommend and can't be beat at this price point

Great value meter

Great Light meter for my plants! I use this to convert over to PPFD to have optimal growth, reference Migro on YouTube. I also use it to manage hot spots and dim areas to get the most out of my lights and electricity.

Very nice meter

Nice little light meter for the farm. Really like the ability to rotate the head so I can take measurements under super bright light and still read the display.

Question & Answer

Question :

Does this give me an accurate reading for blurple LEDs?

Answer :

It read all spectrums of burple along with yellples

Question :

We are doing led lighting upgrades or retrofits. can this be used for comparing replacement and balancing lighting?

Answer :

Yes, that is what I used mine for on a few refits and also on a new project

Question :

how to read the screen? as in Im getting 434 lux and then smaller symbol with x10

Answer :

Press the Range button to change the multiplier.

Question :

Can this measure light sources or grow lights and bulbs for my orchids?

Answer :

The way I understand it is it depends on the type of light source. If your light is considered blurple, it won't read it right. If your lights are on the white to yellowish side ot will work fine

Question :

does it work with incandescent, fluorescent, and hid lamps?

Answer :

Yes I have used for sunlight , LED & fluorescent. You do have to adjust the read out settings up for sunlight for accuracy.

Question :

Would this light meter be accurate to measure grow lights?

Answer :

It will most probably do a good job as it has sensor in front which you point to light source and it measures its LUX value at that distance.

Question :

Does this meter 881d read led light output?

Answer :

hm,not totaly understand for you ask,it can read the led light, but can't read the power of the light

Question :

can this be used for measuring LED lighting for saltwater aquariums?

Answer :

yes

Question :

I would like to know the specifications of the IR serson and its sensitivity vs spectral bandwith, is it calibrated and to what? thanks.

Answer :

Quote from the instructive It is ""calibrated to standard incandescent lamp at color temperature 2856K"".
A spectral sensitivity characteristic graph (response vs wavelenght) also is included, but the numbers were replaced with black lines and are not readable. It looks like a Gaussian bell curve

Question :

Does this light meter measure f-stops for photography and video?

Answer :

It probably will. Device measures the light intensity in LUX units at the sensor location from the light source. So, if your light source is 1 yard from the subject of the photography or video you are taking, just hold the sensor at the subject level pointing at the light source and you should measure the intensity at that point.
