Needs to be dissembled to go over the middle of a pole.
The mount is made up of 6 major pieces: 1 small and one large locking handle, one piece with a 5/8" hole, two more pieces which make up the "jaws" that clamp it to multiple-sized poles and an aluminum insert with 1/4" and 3/8" threads which can slip into the piece with the 5/8" hole so that it can screw to the top of any standard tripod.
It is sturdy enough for just about any job, but my need was to put it onto a light pole which already had a ton of gear mounted on it. I expected that I could loosen the large handle and slip the separated jaws across the pole (not sliding it down from one end). Nope, the jaws don't separate enough for that, so I had to dissemble the two jaws, mount it on the pole and put it back together again in the right order of springs and washers -- getting a lot of grease on my hands.
Note to manufacturer: Please allow the large locking handle to unscrew enough to open the jaws up to 1/2".
