Outstanding for voiceover

UPDATE 2 - September 2020 - MKE 600 vs. MKH 416

I recently received a new Sennheiser MKH 416 for my VO projects and can now directly compare the two microphones. In my opinion, the MKE 600 is still the better microphone for voiceover despite the long and storied history of the 416. The 600 just has a smoother overall tone, particularly on the highs. The 416 has a "big" sound but can easily become quite boomy and sibilant. The 600 does not have this problem thanks to a more forgiving EQ curve. For most VO talent, I would recommend the MKE 600 over the 416, unless you have a client or studio that specifically requires a 416. The battery option on the 600 also means that I can use it as a travel microphone or for quick auditions and reads away from the studio.

UPDATE 1 - November 2017

I've now used my MKE 600 to record hundreds of voiceover jobs for several well-known American brands. This mic has performed superbly through all of it. I no longer use the high-pass filter but instead speak at an angle into the mic; this controls plosives while also yielding a fuller sound. The MKE 600 will continue to be my go-to voiceover microphone for the foreseeable future.

ORIGINAL REVIEW

I purchased this microphone for voiceovers. I have not found any reviews online of the MKE 600 for voiceover purposes, but I figured I would give it a try since its big brother, the MKH 416, is a voiceover industry mainstay. After recording about a dozen demos with the MKE 600, I can say it's by far the best microphone I have ever used for spoken word. The pickup pattern is very tight -- much more focused than I thought it would be since this is a shorter shotgun mic. Off-axis noise rejection is very good. I personally find the frequency response of the MKE 600 to be outstanding. My voice is deep and boomy; and the high-pass filter works great to roll off that boominess. The high frequency boost is also in a different place than is found on most condenser mics. This one boosts around 7 kHz instead of 10 kHz which gives the mic a smoother sound with greater presence. For anyone looking for a great voiceover mic, particularly those who might not be working in a fully treated space, get this MKE 600.

I thought I got a fake!!

I just bought another copy of this mic after having owned one for over 10 years. It is perfect for on camera documentary sound if you camera has a decent sound interface, like a cine camera.

When it arrived I put the two mics (one from 2010, one from 2021) side by side and thought I got a fake! It turns out Sennheiser has changed their logo to a more standard type face and slightly altered the stylized “S” shape and I thought for sure it was an imported knock off.

It doesn’t help that the included literature still has the old version of the logo. It also doesn’t say “Made in Germany” under the logo on the mic anymore.

Great Microphone for the Price!

Using this mic primarily with a Sony a6400. Wanted to upgrade my sound and I use my camera in a variety of settings from video shoots, to live streaming, to online lessons. I wanted to really get better audio especially while speaking and for the price this really delivers. Not a fan of the included shockmount and ended purchasing a cheap $10 mount from amazon for using with mic stands (i am a musician have a ton of these around the house). The capability of running off of phantom or battery power is real handy along with the xlr output. While a bit cumbersome to use with my a6400 (because i need to use a cable adapter) this a small trade off for the quality of audio this thing puts out. Plus my eventual goal is to upgrade to a camcorder with professional xlr inputs and also will eventually add an external audio recorder to my setup. The xlr output of the MKE600 ensures that this mic will be in rotation for many years as my rig changes. I mostly use this mic indoors, in a nontreated room that is quite reverberant (which is not ideal) but the audio is always high quality and useable. Outdoors just as great (can't wait to get a blimp for this mic!). Great when mounted overhead and captures dialogue nicely, i find it to be quite forgiving for such a directional mic.

If you are looking at other mics in this price range I would highly recommend this one!

Best Mic I've Used So Far!

As a YouTube creator, I'm always trying to improve the quality of my videos. Audio was one of my weaker spots over the years, so I decided to change that.

After browsing Amazon, reading hundreds of reviews and Reddit posts, I decided to try the Rode VideoMic Pro. That was a mistake. The mobility of that mic is great, but not the quality.

After returning that one, I switched to the MKE600 and was blown away! The quality is near perfect and the audio quality in my videos has substantially improved.

Now, I don't have the mobility with this mic (see setup below) but that's fine since I'm not a vlogger and on the move all the time.

I use this with the Canon 70D, Zoom H4N and the Comprehensive XLR Plug to Jack Audio Cable. It's quite an advanced setup, especially for YouTube videos, but I'm a perfectionist and the audio quality this beast puts out is top notch! Just be sure that your equipment is compatible with XLR before buying this.

If you want to hear the mic in action, you can search my name on YouTube and watch the videos where I'm standing in front of the mic. I use a different mic in the other videos.

Best mic I've used in my 8+ years filming!

PS: The packaging is awesome as well!

A very solid shotgun mic

I recently purchased and used this to record a family event and it did a very nice job. I mounted it on a Canon XA11 using the holder that came with the mic which was perfect for the job and fit right on the camera. It's a very light mic to transport, I took it on an airplane in my backpack no issues. Having the ability to battery power is a unique plus if you're going to work in the field a lot. I thought the sound quality was quite good for outdoor conditions. For indoor use I used it as a voice commentary mic for some YouTube videos and it sounds fine. I think there are better voiceover mics at this price point but the sound you get is perfectly good so you could use it for that too, but not sure I'd buy it only for that. It makes a great combo indoor/outdoor mic assuming you treat the indoor spaces.

What I expect from a Sennheiser. Worth every penny.

An amazing mic. In self powered mode it works well with my Nikons when shooting video albeit I have to later go and rebalance the audio in post as it only records to the left channel with the XLR to 3.5mm connector. I could drop another adapter in the line to split it to mono L and R but I've been lazy on that front as i've already scripted the process to fix it in post. When connected to my Zoom H4N Pro on phantom power the capabilities of this microphone really shine. Wonderfully directional and it provides a much fuller sound than all my other mic's save my large diaphragm studio mic. The included mount is acceptable but I also purchased a suspension mount for better isolation when shooting on the move only downside is my XLR to 3.5mm adapter is too short to use the suspention mount but that is my fault for buying such a short cable. Also the wind foamy is ok. I would recommend that if you plan to spend a lot of time in very windy areas get something better..

Bottom line, expensive but totally worth it.

Fantastic mic for voiceover.

The mic sounds GREAT for VO. No extra sounds and very focused. Point it st your chest, not your mouth if you plan on using it for VO purposes. After using this, I do t see the need to upgrade to the MKH 416.

Best bang for the buck

You can spend more, but you probably do not need to. This purchase is my second one. I use them overhead in a talk show and on location shoots. They get the job done. I especially like the fact that they can be either self powered with a battery OR powered by phantom power. And the self noise is very low, although just slightly higher on batteries. When used on a set with good ambient absorption you can easily increase the distance from the source and get a very clean sound.

Excellent mic!

This is an all-around great mic! We are using it in our studio and it picks up voices directly in front of it from a very reasonable distance extremely well while keeping all surrounding noises down. We finally got rid of the huge mic directly in front of us for a much cleaner look on videos.

Amazed by this mic

I got this on sale for $250usd... this mic is under-rated. Dynamic mic versatility, with condenser strong signal (mic has preamp)

Very natural sounding ( no hash S sound ), and great bass pickup. Very good noise rejection, too.

Question & Answer

Question :

I'd like to purchase a hard case for this mic, any recommendations?

Answer :

I would also add that I recently got the HPRC 2700 that I will be putting my MKE 600 microphone in along with the Rode Blimp. The Black model is currently priced at $149.20, Interior Dimensions: 21.65" x 18.11" x 8.07" as compared to the HPRC 2300 Blue/Yellow Models priced at $69.90, Interior Dimensions: 12.00" x 9.06" x 5.39". If you need the extra space to fit something like a Blimp Windshield then I'd recomend the 2700, but if you're just looking for something for the Mic and a few accessories like the standard foam screen and mic holder that come with it, then the 2300 should be sufficient.

Question :

does this come with a bracket and hot-shoe mount to put on my cameras?

Answer :

The Senn MKE 600 does not come with a "bracket" however, it does include a shock mount that can slide into and tighten upon and within a cold shoe mount. The shock mount is low profile. Some cam ops really like it, others say it's a little flimsy. It wouldn't be a bad idea to additionally get a mount from KTek

Question :

Will it fit into the C100's mic mount?

Answer :

No I use these rubber rings from lowes I bought on my c100 mic combo.

Question :

can i use this on my iphone x?

Answer :

You will need an XLR to Lightning Port adapter, and you will need battery power for the mic.

Question :

Can this shotgun mic be used with a lyxpro mpl-20?

Answer :

Good day, and thank you for your question. If you have a 5/8 or 3/8 thread on the pole, you will want an adapter to bring it to 1/4" to use the included shock mount. The MZS 20 (optional accessory, allows use of blimp and hair muff) shock mount has 3/8" and 5/8" threading on the mount. Hopefully this helps, and have a good afternoon.

Question :

Can i use it to record live music on my dslr cam?

Answer :

This kind of microphone is going to focus on the spot that it is aimed at. To capture a wider area, look at something like the Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro. Here's a link:

Question :

Is the included wind screen good, or should I get a better one?

Answer :

The screen is good for indoors, but the wind outside can be a bit much at times. The https://www.amazon.com/Rode-WS6-Shotgun-Microphone-Windscreen/dp/B001GVRYRO/ref=sr_1_1?m=A3QYKZ7LXW9O3&s=merchant-items&ie=UTF8&qid=1473892024&sr=1-1&keywords=ws6 works great.

Question :

Will this work with a Zoom F4 field recorder?

Answer :

Yes, As long as you plug it into one of the XLR inputs

Question :

What range can it be covered?

Answer :

Do you mean frequency response of the mic by the term range or, are you referencing polar pattern?
It's a short shotgun mic... Sounds decent and is inexpensive. I've got three in my kit.

Question :

Has anyone used this to record nature sounds, specifically binds in trees? Thank you!

Answer :

It is the best for binds. The binds sound wonderful.
