Portable, good light distribution.

For the price, this umbrella give good light distribution, especially when using a harsh speed light. I've yet to try it as a shoot-thru, but I'm sure it works fine used that way. I have other translucent fabric umbrellas that work great as a shoot-thru, yielding great circular catchlights in the eye. Efficient, easy setup. A tip for those packing any umbrella. In the past, I'd hammer my umbrellas by throwing into my case containing light stands, tripod etc. I purchased a piece of 32" x 2.5" PVC piping, with an end cap. $6 total. Now, I could drive a car over the tube and the umbrella would not be damaged.

I use them monthly and the ribs are just as sturdy as the day they came

I've had 2 of these over a year now. I use them monthly and the ribs are just as sturdy as the day they came. Maybe a travelling pro would have a different opinion after a year but for advanced amateurs these are perfect.
The best part is the black backing that comes off and back on very easily. Changing from shoot through and bounce depending on your style or the space requirements is super easy.
When used outdoors obviously 45 is a lot easier to catch a breeze and flip over than the smaller 36s so make sure you have good stands even though they don't weigh much.
Pros: 1 Has held up for a year, mild use
2 Easy to be shoot through or bounce
3 Small, unobtrusive printed brand logo
Cons: None so far
PS To learn how to use umbrellas with your flashes "The Speedlighters Handbook" is a good choice IMO if you use Canon.

Fiberglass makes a difference

My 2nd Westcott. They have fiberglass umbrella spines, that can flex and bend and snap back, like tent poles. Unlike others that use aluminum that will bend and crease rendering the umbrella useless. With a pair of them now, I can have symmetrical 2 light portraits with these light modifiers. I've recently started using these as shoot through umbrellas, which provides more wrap-around and softer light compared to reflective umbrellas. The black umbrella cover is easy to remove making these very versatile.

This is a great umbrella for shooting through or using as a reflector

This is a great umbrella for shooting through or using as a reflector. I almost bought the cheaper one that is shoot through only, but I'm glad I didn't. I usually use this on one of my camera tripods and when using it for shooting through it doesn't allow you to aim it down as much. This has been an issue when shooting photos of my daughter who just turned one and so I started using it as a reflector. Whichever way you decide to use it, it allows for great lighting with a speedlight. I have been able to get some amazing studio quality shots of my daughter in our living room. I feel like it's a good value and works well and so it's great for an amateur or anyone just getting started as well as more advanced users.

Finally a quality Umbrella!

I made the mistake of trying to go with the cheapest convertible umbrella I could find thinking that they are all kind of the same right? WRONG.

I returned my previous purchase of some cheaper umbrellas and then ordered this product (which I debated on in the first place). WOW, am I super happy I bought this. It comes in a plastic sleeve, and the umbrella is miles better quality than my last purchase. This umbrella has solid materials, from the shaft, to the cover material, through to the FIBREGLASS construction of the support ribs.

I couldn't be happier and the light it produces on shoot-through is wonderful. It does NOT have a silver reflective cover on the black portion which is removable, and I really haven't compared the bounce light to an umbrella that does have a black removable cover with a silver side... so I can't say if there is a difference. The white material has a nice sheen to it and it does bounce so I can safely say that it works very well in both types of configurations.

If I need another umbrella of any kind in the future I will not waste me time trying to save a few dollars and just go with this brand from now on.

Arrived in a timely fashion, exactly as described in perfect new condition.

Great Umbrealla

This is a great umbrella. I think someone said that when you take off the black cover there is pointy ends. NO! There is not. They are flat pieces of metal that really can't hurt you. The black cover goes back on really easy too. I didn't want to remove it because I was afraid to put it back on, but once I did, I though man I should have been doing this a long time ago it went on so easy!

The thickness of the white material is pretty good. Almost as thick as the cover on my softbox. It is definitely thicker than the version I paid $8 for. I would buy another one of these for sure.

Simple to use, beautiful soft light

Quality appears good. Operation is simple and feels solid.

Used this for two days of shooting so far and am very happy with the results. The light is less directional than other lighting modifiers and gives a broad soft light. Very forgiving and flattering.

A fine Purchase

I like that what came in the mail is exactly what I wanted and needed. When using this umbrella it kind of has a little secularity to it and served me well as a reflector XD. The shoot through is like a go to for me because Its simple and shoots light all over. All I usually have to adjust for is if I'm going to feather it or not. ITs awesome and perfect. I highly recommend surfing YouTube to find different ways to use an Umbrella and Shoot through Umbrella. Awesome Modifier.

Perfect Size

A good build. Solid construction at a fair price. I use mine for indoor studio shoots only, bought the Manfrotto adaptor for my stands and it works like a charm for the this umbrella. The 45 inch is a very easy size to work with gives all the light bounce you need for a cleans shadow free shoot. Larger sizes can be bought and I'm sure they have the same quality and a place for some photographers, but the 45 inch works fine for me.

Overal this is a good and i recommend it for your collection.

Materials Seem Cheap but the Umbrella works well!

The umbrellas work well. I’m a little scared that the aluminum rod is going to bend if any pressure is applied to it but so far the product is working well. The umbrella is super easy to transfer from reflective to shoot through. Much easier than I thought. I’m happy with my purchase.

Question & Answer

Question :

Do they make a front diffuser for this umbrella?

Answer :

Yes, Westcott calls them Umbrella Diffusion Fabric. They're three sizes one for 43 inch Westcott part number 5639, for 53 inch it's 5640 and for seven foot it's 4341D.

Question :

What color is the inside of the cover? If you put the cover on, is it a white reflective umbrella, or is it a silver reflective umbrella?

Answer :

It's basically a white reflective inside the umbrella. I think the black outer cover makes it look a little more silver but I haven't seen any color difference in my photos using it as a bounce umbrella.

Question :

Where can I get the black cover so light do not spread?

Answer :

The Westcott part number 2016 45-inch umbrellaand the 4633 7-foot umbrella come with removable black backs. I also use black material from a fabric store to block light from the side. Mounted on cardboard it's called a flag. Sweat shirt material is stretchy and works well. A little heavy but wrinkle resistant.

Question :

What is the difference between this model ($30) and the Westcot model 3625 ($45), other than this one has a removable black backing?

Answer :

As far as I know, the removable black backing is the only difference. If you think you are ever going to need the versatility of the model 3625 using it as a shoot through instead of a reflective umbrella, then by all means purchase the 3625 model. If not, then go with the $30 model.

Question :

Would a YongNuo flash work well with this size umbrella?

Answer :

Yes

Question :

I ordered a 45" umbrella and mine is only about 40"? What gives?

Answer :

I have never measured mine just took it at face value. This day and age who knows

Question :

When bouncing light, does much light leak through the black backing or is it fairly opaque?

Answer :

Opaque

Question :

Will it fit a Profoto B1 light?

Answer :

It should, provided the Profoto mount bracket has an umbrella attachment. I think it's pretty standard - at least on Paul Buff strobes to. I use this umbrella with one or two speed lights bouncing off it.

Question :

will the 43" Umbrella Diffusion Fabric fit this umbrella since this is 45"?

Answer :

Probably not?? These things fit very tightly and I'm guessing you'd damage/tear or stress something.

Question :

Is it collapsible? What is the length after folding?

Answer :

My copy folds up just like an umbrella to a length of 29 1/4 in (74 1/2 cm).
