Worked very well.

I needed this cable to get some old video off a Sony Hi-8 camcorder. This thing saved the day! I connected this to the camera, then to an Apple Firewire to Thunderbolt (series 2) dongle then to an Apple Thunderbolt (series 2) to Thunderbolt (series 3, USB-C) dongle, into my Windows 10 laptop with a Thunderbolt/USB-C port. I couldn't believe it actually worked! No issues at all. Spent way more on the Apple dongles than this cable. If you have ports or dongles that this will connect to, it will transfer the data. Definitely be careful verifying which kind of Firewire ports you have. There are 4-pin, 6-pin, and 9-pin Firewire versions--gotta love "standards". I really appreciate the detailed description for this cable.

Great cable for sony 8mm TRV350 to iMac

I bought a used TRV350 sony 8 mm video camera April of 18 , doing the conversion of 8mm tape to digital . first to an old apple G4 powerbook with firewire 400 cable which worked well but filled the drive . All the 1394b means is the video camera can be controlled from the keyboard . Stop play ff rewind , and works well . If you have the older 8 mm the video is a bit better the a kennedy video , still nice memories . I first tried the cable on my 09 iMac which seemed not to fit firewire 800 but one review listed as the same camera and computer I had . So figured I would just eat the mistake order or wrong shipment . A week went by and gave it another try ,the fire wire 800 end looks like two male ends . So I aligned the two 800 plugs and with more pressure than normal it just slid in . More pressure on the camera digital video plug ,,,,, Zingo it all works . With the iMovie it runs great , run the whole tape or stop and start as you like . Have a big hard drive , as 350 mb was 1:43 seconds of video time . Great fun I would recommend the camera and iMac combo for 8 mm sony work . Recommend it to all

Worked well with thunderbolt to firewire adapter

Used this to connect my mini DV canon camcorder to a thunderbolt port (via apple thunderbolt to firewire adapter). This helped me get my DV tape videos backed up onto a harddrive (via wife's macbook air with thunderbolt port).

Decently built and matched the advertised length.

Needed for transport control on an older SONY camera.
I had a mini 4pin to full 4pin (FW400) but needed this one for my FW800 card.
For the cost of an adapter, this seemed like a better choice.

It worked out fine. Finding a good program was a pain though. I ended up using HDVsplit.
Before blaming connectivity, understand that the official software for these cameras dropped compatibility a while ago.

I've not tried within any NLEs yet, but I'm sure connectivity won't be the issue.

Worked perfectly using a legacy 2012 Mac Pro and Canopus / Grass Valley ADVC-300

Worked perfectly using a legacy 2012 Mac Pro and Canopus / Grass Valley ADVC-300.

The Canopus ADVC-300 originally came with FireWire 400 cables, Apple discontinued FireWire 400 in around 2008. This cable solved the problem of using a Mac Pro that only has FireWire 800. The cable worked perfectly.

It works for pulling video from old camcorders

I was able to use this with no problems to pull several hours of video from my old camcorder before recycling it. It worked very reliably with no glitches or other issues. I had no idea just how much my kids used the camcorder when they were little, this lead to hours of entertainment with all of laughing at just how strange they were when they were younger.

Worked perfectly with my Sony TRV900 - MacBook Air - Apple Lightning/FireWire adapter

Worked first time with my old Sony TRV900 cam and Apple Lightning/FireWire adapter and using iMovie. Captured all videos perfectly. Easy peasy. This adapter/cable combination would not work in my Bootcamped Windows 10 partition but I did not expect it to function based upon what I have read... not an issue with this firewire cable but rather Apple not providing the driver for Windows. But with the files now pulled onto the Mac drive I can process them them any way I wish.

Well made it does what is supposed to do.

First of all yes it works with a macbook pro with retina display. Although you need an apple adapter from firewire 800 with 9 pin to tunderbolt, connect the thunderbolt to your mac and the 1394b to you mini dv camera and then connect the 800 male to the female you should end up with a white cable comming out from your mac that attaches to a black cable that goes to your mini dv camara. Also do not expect to hear the tum tum sound that plug and play hardware do when you connected to windows. In mac just go to imovie and open the camera from there. I have a canon gl2 and canon xl2 both of them used mini dv. The cable construction is good and this a cheaper way to connect your old mini Dv cameras to the latest apple computers which don't come with 800 firewire.

It works with FCP 10.3

Brought new life to my ancient Sony Digital 8 DCR TRV530 camcorder. Goes directly from the camera into my iMac. Also, just for your information, Final Cut Pro 10.4.3 DOES recognize this camera for import, even though these old TRVs are not on the official list.

Awesome cable, excellent price

Hola

Had to buy one of these little guys to hook up my oldschool Panasonic pv-gs80 camcorder to my iMac. I visited 2 local stores trying to find a cable that would allow me to go mini firewire to firewire 800 (my iMac only has an 800 port on the back.... how...handy........... ) and each cable was around $20-$40 in price. Ridiculous!

Thought, what the heck, this cord is only a couple bucks (plus shipping of course) and I took a chance on it. Fantastic little cord - iMac has no issues seeing my little camcorder, the cord hasn't been flukey at all with me capturing loads of footage, and the connector's both seem very secure and don't jiggle loose from my iMac or my little camcorder.

Smarter...not harder... If you're in need of one of these little cords - I highly recommend this. You'll save oodles of cash and not sacrifice any quality. Stop paying for brand markup on cables :)

Question & Answer

Question :

I have a Toshiba Satellite L655, will this cable work for my laptop?

Answer :

If your L655 has a firewire port, it should connect, if it is a 400 IEEE firewire port,it may be slow, but if the port on the computer is either 400 or 800 it should work. If it is an older machine I don;t know how well a/v will transfer.

Question :

I have a dead macbook pro from 2010...will this cable work to transfer files to a new macbook pro?

Answer :

I dont believe this cable will do that. It wont connect to both macbooks. Also, the new ones don't even have firewire connections available.

Question :

Will this connect a Firewire 800 to a Thunderbolt 2 ? Thanks

Answer :

This is a FireWire 800 to IEEE 1394 - 4 pin cable

Question :

Does anyone have experience using this cable with *hdv* cameras, specifically? if so, does your editing software recognize the camera when connected?

Answer :

I use it to download my raw video from a JVC camcorder to my MacBook Pro. The results are clean and easy.

Question :

Does anyone have experience using this cable with *hdv* cameras, specifically? if so, does your editing software recognize the camera when connected?

Answer :

Yes. The have cable is automatically recognized with both my Sony and JVC cameras. The footage can then be transferred to your editing software.

Question :

Will this work with a Panasonic older camcorder of the PV type?

Answer :

I'm not sure. I bought this for a sony with a DV out to interface with a mac

Question :

Will this work to transfer video from a mini dv camcorder to my iMac?

Answer :

It worked for me. Between mini dv to my mac book pro retina

Question :

Does this work with a jvc compact vhs camcorder?

Answer :

I’m not familiar with the JVC camcorder so I’m not 100% sure. If the camcorder has a 4-pin firewire input/output jack - one matching the small shiny connector on the left in the photo, it will work - assuming of course you have a Firewire IEEE 1394 input on your computer or other digital device.

It shouldn’t be too hard to tell. You should be able to find it on the camcorder near the other connection jacks such as RCA jacks and/or S-video cable connection.

Just make sure you don’t mistake a mini-USB jack for the Firewire i/o if your camcorder has one. They’re a similar size but shaped differently. The Firewire connector is flat on one side and curved or u-shaped on the other, while a mini-USB is not.

Also this cable is only works with newer high-speec firewire ports. It’s backwards compatible as far as speeds, but if you have an older Firewire board you might need the older style 6-pin firewire connector on the other end instead of the square 9-pin connector shown here.

Question :

The 800 end of this cable doesn't match the 800 port on my MacBook because of the housing size. Are all the positive reviewers just forcing it in?

Answer :

This was my first cable I bought to record from my Canon XL2 to my MacBook...from the start it was hard to get in the FireWire port, never felt right. It did sync though, for a few weeks then one day nothing...I'd stay far away from this one....I ordered the SIIG 9PIN To 4PIN Firewire 800 Cable and so far it's been great and actually feels normal going into the FireWire port

Question :

Can I use this to connect my MacBook to a hp laptop?

Answer :

If you have those two connection types I can’t see why not.
