A true converter - works on macOS with IBM Model M keyboard

USB to PS/2 Keyboard / Mouse splitters are definitely NOT all created equal. Most are merely plug adapters and not true converters. And of course the vast majority are all simply generically-branded so they are hard to research and have virtually no driver support. This becomes even more of a challenge if you are wanting to use this on a macOS.

After quite a bit of research I concluded that this particular unit would indeed work on a Mac. Since there are few brand names I mostly had to go by the picture, and the long (2-inch) thick part on the USB end was indicative of this being an actual converter which is what I needed to get my IBM Model M working on my Macbook.

Sometimes it does glitch out and I have to tap the ALT key (mapped to the mac command-key) a few times, but this is pretty rare.

TIP: For my 20+ year old Model M keyboard I remapped ALT to command, CTRL to option, and CAPS LOCK to control (very rarely used by anything on the mac), as well as PAUSE and SCROLL LOCK to be brightness down and up.

This was much cheaper than buying a modern Mac-compatible Model M-style clicky keyboard from Unicomp ($120+) and I would definitely recommend this adapter over all other generic-branded ones. For PC/Windows users, you could definitely get away with a cheaper-made adapter, but for the price I would get this real converter and know that you have something that will be useful on a variety of computers. I had a couple non-brand and a logitech USB-PS2 adapter, and none of them worked at all for macOS.

Even if you don't care about Mac, I've had plenty of USB-PS2 adapters over the years, and sometimes they don't even work on particular makes/models of PCs!!!, so getting a REAL converter like this is just smart.

Thisi One Works!

I give this good product * for sheerness -There is no sheerness to it at all.
I give this good product * for thickness. There is way too much thickness in this product.
I give this product overall rating of ***** because this is a very good product.
I have an old Kinesis keyboard. It was given to me by one of the best bosses I had in this computer industry.
I have typed hundreds of thousands of lines of code on this keyboard. I disassembled it, soaked the key caps, washed every part of it so many times over the years. The Esc. key is a bit lazy, the 'C' needs some polishing and lubrication, the contacts in the Back-Space key switch got all mangled and then reshaped. It uses the old, original PC connector, a large DIN 5 pins connector. Over the years, I added a PC to PS2 adapter. When I decided, at the age of 70, to write some code again, out came the Kinessis, all dusty and dirty. One more restoration, and off we go. But for that to work, I needed a USB adapter. I tried few others with no results at all. But his one worked! I am typing with it connected to a new all Amazon computer build, and you can see I am in no shortage of words.
If you have an old keyboard around, get two of this adapter; One to use, and one to use when/if someone manages to destroy the one you are using.
Go for it - it is inexpensive, and it works very well.

Worked like a charm....

I wanted to use a Dell keyboard that was more like the "old" style IBM KB's of yore. Of course, the cable was a PS2 style. Also had the track style mouse with a PS2 connector. I simply plugged the KB and mouse into the adapter and then plugged the USB connector into my Win 7 computer, which was not running. Once the connections were made, I started my computer and waited for the computer to sort things out. Several minutes later when the mouse responded to movement, I logged in and all worked perfectly (one of those rare occasions). Gotta love the tactile feel of the older keyboards.

Old keyboard back in business

I didn't like the keyboard that came with my new computer, but the old keyboard that I like has a PS connector, not USB. This converter enabled me to use my old keyboard. Fewer typos, more comfortable. Shipping was fast - less than a week and it was included in the price. This converter worked right out of the box.

This is not the same as an adapter. An adapter does not convert the signals going from the keyboard to the computer and when I tried one, the computer didn't recognize the keyboard.

This worked very nicely to connect my favorite old IBM model M4 small keyboard to my new Windows 10 PC that has no PS-2 ports. Worked for the mouse too. Plug and play, the drivers loaded when the adapter was plugged in and the keyboard and mouse worked instantly when plugged in.

Easy to use

This adapter makes my lovely old keyboard usable with my new computer. It works fine. The keyboards provided with new desktop computers are essentially unusable. I was facing having to trash my old keyboard before I found you on Amazon. I didn't need the mouse adapter that is part of the product, but it would be a plus for anyone who needs it.

IT'S A PS/2 - USB ADAPTER

Everything is good. Properly color-coded. Standard length. Tight connection. Does not appear to be cheaply made. But unless you know your stuff, you can wind-up with the wrong thing. USB was supposed to be simple. Now there are almost 20 configurations. DIN connectors are simpler but you still have to deal with male and female matching. So pick the right one as best you can because they are not all the same. This particular configuration has been out for many years and this particular product is the accepted standard. Good luck!

Keyboard adapter

I had an older Dell keyboard in perfect condition and wanted to hook it up to a laptop because I hate those really low flat keys it has. I realized it had a totally different plug, so got this adapter. Saw a lot of reviews for adapters that were negative, but this one seemed ok. I haven't had any problems, I plug it in and it works perfectly. Very easy & straightforward.

Thick and sheer at the same time

Ha ha, who selects the review criteria? The USB to dual ps2 adapter works perfectly; I missed my old computer's keyboard where the key spacing fit my hands. And the old mouse still worked, so I was able to hook both to just one USB outlet on new computer. Back to accurate touch-typing, yay.

Works perfectly!

It does exactly what it is supposed to do! I haven't used my old keyboard at home in several years. Having to make the quick switch to work from home meant that I needed it again. I am so glad that I was able to find one to order and that it arrived within a couple of days.

Question & Answer

Question :

How would u convert this. Do I buy a wireless mouse

Answer :

No you don't need a wireless mouse. This adapter enables you to connect a ps2 mouse or a ps2 keyboard (or both) to a USB port on your computer. To do this, you plug the ps2 connector on your mouse or keyboard (or both) into the ps2 connector (s) on the adapter and then connect the USB plug on the adapter to a USB port on your computer. Mice and keyboards these days are either wireless or USB so you only need this adapter if you have an older ps2 mouse or keyboard that you want to connect to your computer. I had to buy this adapter when I built a new computer recently so that I could get into the BIOS during the Power on Self Test (POST), which requires that you use the keyboard F2 or Delete keys during the POST. I have a wireless keyboard, which is not enabled until after the POST is completed; USB ports are enabled during POST but I don't have a USB keyboard so I had to use an old ps2 keyboard and connect it to a USB port on the computer, using the adapter, so that the keyboard was enabled during the POST. I hope this explanation helps.
