Versatile, sturdy, quiet

Was using this on set and it quickly became one of the go-to lights, definitely getting another one. Bi-color, can control temperature easily to match other lights if needed, quiet, versatile, well built. What else could you want? Oh it didn’t come with a bag…maybe that, but the box it came in has been more than sufficient for the time being and is easily repackable.

A most have on budget light.

Quality build feel very good. Aperture make very good lights.
Intensity it is super good for a B light and even for a key light.
Love the small details as the hanger of the power source and the strap for the cables, this small things make it very special to work with because really make the set up easier and faster.

Love the fact you can control it with the app and your phone, that give you a lot of flexibility.

The screws are easy to tight, not extra torque need it, the block the motion and so far (4 month) do not loose the grip.

The best budget priced 200w bi-color light on the market

The 200X is the most expensive in Aputure’s new Amaran light of “budget” priced lights. I put “budget” in quotes as they are still fairly expensive lights but for the performance you are getting then the price certainly can be considered budget. Especially when you consider Aputure’s other lights like the 120D or 300D.

The build quality isn’t quite to the level of Aputure’s other lights nor are they priced like it. In actual use I have found the build quality perfectly acceptable and certainly far better then some of these other budget options out there from other overseas brands like Neewer. I have carried these from shoot to shoot in multiple locations and haven’t had so much as a scratch. Keep in mind there is a bit of plastic on these so if you keep dropping them on the ground, sure something is going to break. Take care of these however and there is no reason they won’t last you for years to come.

Keep in mind these production versions of these lights differ a bit from the early pre-production copies that many of the reviews you will see on Youtube for example. Differ in a GOOD way. Some of those reviews had issues with cracking on the yoke from being tightened on the light stand. Aputure has addressed this with a little raised area of plastic around the tightening screw on the yokoe so that shouldn’t be an issue any long. Do keep in mind even with that fix you don’t want to go over tightening the screw as it is still plastic. Another big improvement that has been made was with the fan. Many reviewers just slammed the Amaran 200 series about their crazy high fan noise. It appears Aputure has replaced those fans and now in my testing I have found these lights to be no louder than even the Godox SL II series which are very quiet lights to begin with. To sum up, Aputure has completely addressed the problems with those pre-production lights. They also seem to have upgraded the yoke as well. I THINK it’s still plastic but it’s certainly a different kind of plastic. It has a slick feel to it and just feels more sturdy.

If for no other reason, the Sidus Link app control is one of, if not THE, best reasons to get these lights. There is no better mobile app for lighting control I have ever seen anywhere. You can not only fully control the whole Amaran line, but also the rest of Aputure’s lights like their B7C bulb and more robust, and expensive, Lightstorm 120D. You can not just control the light power but also color temperature and special effects of which the 200X has a few. This app rocks. You want to use it. Hands down.

I will say if you are looking for the brightest Amaran light, this isn’t it. Being that it is bi-color it is actually a bit less bright than the Amaran 200D which is daylight only. So if you need the brightest Amaran light, get the 200D. This is the brightest BI-COLOR Amaran light. Now personally I find that I am often just using daylight (5600k) light most of the time but there are occasions when I find a bi-color light useful. One area is in real estate videography. Mixed lighting situations in the interior of a house is very common. Packing this into your bag and you can match the color of the yellow-ish color of the incandescent bulbs you often see in houses. For video this is a life saver.

Drawbacks with this light? Well nothing specific to this version but just the Amaran line in general. Keep in mind many of the drawbacks were conscious decisions made by Aputure to keep the costs down. First is you don’t get a bag with this light which is a bit of a bummer considering how expensive it is. Do yourself a favor and get one. I just do not light the new hyper reflector. It creates a super bright small circle of light in the center of the beam which then quickly falls off on the sides creating a big hot spot. Now for many this may not even be an issue as I bet most folks won’t be using the reflector at all and instead using a softbox.

All that being said, I LOVE this light. The color accuracy is spot on. The fan noise has been addressed so you have a fairly quiet light now. The Sidus Link app is just a dream to use. I’m so happy Aputure came up with this budget line of lighting products for the creator that doesn’t have a pro level budget but still wants pro level results. I’m sold. In fact I’m sold 3 times over as I also have the 200D and the 100X as well.

The Amaran Line: Budget, that doesn't feel or perform like budget.

I'm sure you've heard the hype around these lights:
-That they are VERY bright.
-That they are compact and lighter.
-That they are straightforward and easy, no frills to use.
And the hottest topic:
-That they are 1/3 of the price of their big siblings.

All of the above is true, with, of course, some fine print to take into account.

These lights are extremely bright, what Aputure has done with the Amaran line is basically crunching a LightStorm (X Series) in a smaller platform with "similar performance", lowering costs for entry professionals who don't want to compromise power output.

See, all i've said is true, but like always where are compromises as well, so i'm not going to say this light is better than the LightStorm series, as i've noticed a few things:

-Luminance: While very good and extremely powerful, luminance is not as even all across the beam compared to the LightStorm series. And the X series present less "evenness" than the D series based on how the LED Block was designed compared to the LightStorm X series. There's a slight but visible "unevenness" on top and bottom, but only visible on a testing environment (against a backdrop or wall) and not on a practical application.

-Controls: Two knobs for the X series compared to the D series that only had one knob other than the On-Off Switch and the Bluetooth (BT Pair). The brightness knob and the color temperature knob. It can also be paired to your Smartphone thru the Aputure Sidus Link App and control the brightness, color temperature and turn it on/off (while on standby) from your smartphone, VERY USEFUL to control the luminance power and the lights are out of reach. Pairing was really simple, just pushed the BT pair button and added the light to my Sidus App.

-Display: Monochrome display that shows the on/on status, if its bluetooth paired, light intensity (0-100%), and light temperature.

-Bowens Mount: It has a standard bowens mount, and it has a latch to release the bowens lock on the top of the light, also the LED panel comes protected with a frosted clear shield mounted on the Bowens slot.

-Build Quality: It is very well built and it feels way above the Godox/Neewer/Flashpoint Budget line. BUT, behind the Aputure LightStorm series, which are all metal, this one is a mix of metal and plastic, despite that, it still has a premium feeling to it.

-Noise: Interestingly enough, i got a Amaran 200d that has a weird humming, but i couldn't hear the same noise, just an even "hum" on this one that it's almost inaudible, where the 200d has some sort or "hmmmrk" noise, that regardless was barely noticeable, at least for my application.

-Power Supply: It comes with a power brick and a generous amount of cord to reach the light at least 15ft away from the floor, the connection to the light has a safety release that would prevent accidental disconnections, it also has a safety release from the outlet to the power brick, i love details and Aputure didn't short us on these features.

-Accessories: It came with a Bowens Mount Standard Reflector that sort of suffers from a central hotspot (compared to using my Godox Standard Reflector which resulted in a more even beam) and Aputure Stickers. NO CARRYING BAG THIS TIME GUYS :'D

+++VERDICT+++
Aputure hit a Homerun with these lights. Period.
Is it more powerful than the LightStorm Series? Short answer is No. But it goes beyond that.
Are these as Good as the LightStorm when it comes to build quality? No, but it comes close.
Are these as customizable as the LS? No, the LS can house batteries, have a wide gamma of remote controls targeted to Pros.

These are the new standard on PROFESSIONAL entry level lights.

Great bi-color light for video productions

This is an excellent light for video production, and just like my old Amaran 200d, the amount of light this 200x provides is espectacular, with the difference that now I can control the light temperature with this model.

Aputure is known for the product quality, and while this light is in their budget friendly line, is still of good quality. They used more plastic elements of the light in order to lower the cost, but it still feels of a solid build. The light itself has a nice weight, heavier than many LED panels, which is great when using it with C-Stands and heavy duty light tripods. Because this light is compatible with Bowens mount, adding a diffuser can add more weight to it, so it is recommended it to use the appropriate light stands to secure properly the light.

When it comes to controlling the light, it is as simple as with other models. It has two knobs to control brightness and light temperature. Each knob can also be pushed to change each value in increments instead of gradually. There is a power button and a Bluetooth button. This light can also be controlled via Bluetooth using the Sidus Link app.

The light also has an umbrella hole mount, so it can also be used with umbrella light diffusers.

When it comes to heat, it does generate a lot of heat, so it is recommend it to be used either on open spaces or where the air conditioner is set to low if in small closed spaces like a regular room.

When it comes to fan noise, I’d say it is acceptable, especially since this light shouldn’t be used too close to the subject in order to avoid heat on the talent, so the mic shouldn’t be able to pick up much or any noise from the cooling fan.

In general I am very pleased with this light and I would definitely recommend it.

One of the best prosumer lights available

Aputure created an awesome light that is extremely bright with many of the functions and features of there more professional light sets at a more affordable price.

You have bi-color bright light with Sidus link control and many of the popular scene modes you find in most lights.

It does not come with a stand, hand held remote, case, or the ability to use v-mount batteries. This allows those with a lower budget to be able to purchase a truly powerful light for video and photo work. Be sure to use a good c-stand or professional light stand if you are using any light modifiers. I am currently using light weight stands alone for these lights.

Great quality light I highly recommend for any new content creator.
