Very good solar filter for the price

In preparation for the 2017 solar eclipse, I needed a solar filter for my new Celestron CGEM II 800 HD  Celestron CGEM II Edge HD Telescope (8" OTA)  so I selected this filter because I trust Celestron products.

This is my initial impressions review and will provide more details later. I felt compelled to write a review now in order to help others who interested in this product but hesitate because it hasn't received any reviews. Why 5 stars? It may not perform like a more expensive glass solar filter but for the price, the build quality is exceptional and my initial observations with a 25mm eyepiece are quite acceptable.

Having used both Baader and Thousand Oaks solar filter products, it appears as though this filter is a hybrid of those types. The outside surface has a silver reflective coating, while the inside is a bl ack polymer film. The end result is a slight change to the sun's natural white to a pleasing yellow tone. More importantly, the sun appears quite sharp with no degradation of optical quality. I need to take some high magnification photos to confirm this observation.

Although the film is exposed and needs proper care to avoid damage, it does seem quite solid. I especially appreciate that its frame is made of a sturdy plastic material; it is solid enough that you cannot flex its frame. The filter is also very lightweight at 4.3 oz (121 g) making it one of the lightest solar filters that I have tested.

A summary... more details to follow in about a week.

Pros:
- Inexpensive and is designed to fit the Celestron 8" scope (I have the newer HD model)
- Combines the characteristics of both the Baader and Thousand Oaks solar films.
- Includes velcro straps for additional safety.
- Very lightweight and sturdy.

Cons:
- None that I have observed yet. I still need to test high magnification using this filter.

Additional recommendations:
Because the filter material is exposed, I highly recommend purchasing a hard case to protect this filter when not in use. This is not a negative observation because even the glass filters should be protected by a hard case. I will update my review as soon as I find a suitable case for this filter.

To add later:
- How this filter performs in high-resolution photography.
- Photos of the sun.

Telescopes not just for nighttime

Why let half your viewing time go to waste? Best way to get a close up of a star.

Fits just like your lens cap, what could be easier to install. Just pop this bad boy on and start doing what your mama told you to never do. Stare at the Sun through a telescope! This will let you look at the Sun without going blind, how cool is that?

Ok it's just some Mylar and a plastic frame, but it is the right kind of Mylar and the plastic frame (and Velcro) makes sure it doesn't fall off. Even if there isn't a eclipse coming up where you are there is plenty to see on the Sun.

Bought this at a great discount on Amazon

Unfortunately, it's too big for my telescope. I am still able to use it and have enjoyed it very much. I have been able to see sun spots with it. I definitely recommend you get one that fits your scope as the last thing you want is to be looking through your eyepiece at the sun and the filter falls off. That would be bad. A 600 pound twinkie bad.

WOW

I was a little worried about looking at the sun for the first time with my telescope, and after I did I was blown away. It fit my telescope perfect I never thought I would be looking at that big orange ball in the sky without spending thousands of more dollars on those expensive solar telescopes. Well worth the money to be able to do that.

Great Product

I used this on a Celestron Evolution 6 telescope for a partial solar eclipse and was happy how sharp the sun looked. I did not sense any heat and the light level was excellent and very easy on the eyes. Recommend this solar filter. It is an excellent product.

Don't fall, adapt.

Not intitially Sky-watcher dob compatible but after reading the discription I see this isn't what this filter was made for so that one's my fault, luckily the package it came in works for a perfect adapter. Gave me my first view of our sun and it works great, would recommend!

Question :

Does this come with a safe place to store or carry the filter?

Answer :

It comes in a cardboard box, it also fits nicely in a 1 gallon Ziploc bag.

Question :

Is this filter compatible with Meade LS8 telescope?

Answer :

Hello Felipe (et al), as promised, I measured the inside and outside diameter of this Celestron Eclipsmart Solar Filter (8" Eclipsmart Solar Filter model #94244). The maximum inside diameter is: 21.5 cm or 8.46 inches if one wanted to fit the filter OVER a telescope tube. The OD measurements (to fit this filter into a telescope - as it is designed to fit into the Celestron) is actually 22.6 cm or 8.9 inches. Of course, it is still adaptable to other sizes by making an expansion or reduction ring from a piece of PVC piping. I hope this will help someone. Question :

Will i need any additional filters to view the sun directly (eg.filter for eyepiece)? or is this single accessory enough to turn my 8se into a sun th

Answer :

The white light filter that you are contemplating is the only accessory you need for solar viewing. Recognize that white light filters give you the ability to view features on the sun's photosphere such as sun spots. I've gotten much enjoyment from a filter similar to the Celestron 94244. The sun is currently at a minimum level of activity, so lately there has only been a majestic yellow orange ball to observe - but that is impressive in it's own right. To observe more dynamic features in the chromosphere (prominences, flares, etc) requires a whole different type of ultra narowband pass filter that is significantly more expensive. White light observing is basic but very satisfying when there's something happening on the surface.

Question :

Will this fit my 20 year old Celestar 8?

Answer :

Yes, by using the Velcro strips that come with it.

Question :

Will this fit my celestron CPC800?

Answer :

Not sure about the CPC800 but it fit my Celestron NexStar 8SE perfectly.

Question :

Will this fit my 6” newtonian? or will it only fit scs?

Answer :

While this is probably a perfect fit for a 6" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopt, I use this with my Celestron Omni XLT 150 Newtonian. I made a slight modification by cutting off two of the three tabs on the back of the filter. This way the remaining tab will register the filter within the tube and the velcro straps will secure the filter nicely. (Using all three tabs most likely will not be able to squeeze into your telescope tube.) Don't forget to leave your finderscope caps ON -- sudden hair loss may occur!

Question :

Is this suitable for nextar 8se?

Answer :

Yes. It's specifically made for the Nexstar 8SE. That's what I own. It fits exactly the same way as the aperture cover that comes with the telescope.
