Wow they changed from the 1st to the hero black are epic!
Wow for all the upgrades and changes GoPro made!! All I can say is epic. I hated the very first GoPro. I ended up leaving it on the shelf and eventually gave it to my brother. But the hero 8 black is allot, I mean drastically different in the user friendly profile alone. You can Bluetooth your videos up to your preferred device as long as it’s Bluetooth capable or is the micro SD card.
If I was to stretch for a complaint I would only have two. 1 being battery life sucks when you shots in 4K and use the Bluetooth on to link to your phone, especially if your previewing what it’s recording (btw This is epic option they added). And the hyper image stabilization.
When your running all these added features the battery dies in about 30-45 minutes, and the GoPro gets a bit hot to handle.
I have turned some of these functions off prior to recording and the battery life does improve, plus the camera doesn’t seem to get near as hot as fast!

The gopro 8 is amazing in every way. I am blown away with the upgrades to it. The hyper-lapse feature has already paid for the gopro 10x over doing a job where I needed the ability to go into realtime for a few secs and back to hyper-lapse. I wish the app would catch up and allow you to switch to real time from hyper-lapse remotely instead of only on camera.
The only issue is getting it properly mounted bc the mounting clips that pull down are convenient, but tend to make it wobble or very easy to set up crooked. The other thing with this package is that the “mini” tripod is a waste. It’s made of cheap plastic and has broken already, I would like to see a nice metal one that extends a little further and threaded so it can go on a tripod or light stand.

First impressions and background
Just got this and started playing with it, but first a little background.
I also have two 5 Blacks and a 7 Black. I drive a truck (truck, not peekup) and use these to record my trips and the traffic around me. I record several hours of video every day. With a minor amount of effort, these work much better than typical dashcams. I use them without batteries inside the cab, with USB-C cables powering them. They tend to overheat with the batteries installed when mounted inside the windshield. The 5s still overheat sometimes without the battery. The 7 seldom does. They're often in the sun for hours at a time, so this isn't really a fault. It's not what they're designed to do. The 7 stays connected to the app much better than the 5s do. It's just a much more capable camera all around.
The Hero 7 Black TimeWarp and stabilization are first rate. The first video I took using it on my Jeep, a friend thought I'd bought a gyro-stabilized mount. It's that good. I assume the 8 is at least as good. I expect it to be better.
I've also owned a cheaper "Action Camera". It actually handled the heat better, until the battery swelled up and destroyed the camera. If you're looking for a toy, those are fine. If you want something that lasts, GoPro, with all its faults, is just about all there is. Nothing else does what they do while taking a substantial amount of abuse.
There is a dive case with external battery available from Suptig (on Amazon) for the 5, 6, and 7, but not for the 8. I use this case for the 5s when I mount them outside the truck. I use a Panavise mount with tethers outside the truck. The Panavise mount is heavy enough to hold the heavy battery with the camera mounted on it. I've also used this setup on my Jeep, but not as much as I'd like. There are dive cases for the 8, but not with external batteries that I've found.
The main feature of the 8 that I was drawn to was the ability to switch from TimeWarp to Realtime and back while recording. Unfortunately, this control isn't available on the app, only on the camera screen. I'll just have to mount the 8 where I can tap the screen easily while driving. Not optimum, but not a deal killer.
The app could be a lot better, but GoPro insists on using it for marketing. The app is useful, but I've already bought four GoPros. The cameras sold themselves. The app lacks a lot of features I'd like to see on it, though it is much better now than when I was given my first GoPro 4. The 4 still works fine, by the way, and I still use it where I'm afraid I might lose the camera, such as under the Jeep.
The battery door and charge port on the Hero 8 Black are completely different from the Hero 5 Black and Hero 7 Black. If you plan to use the camera for long periods without the battery, you'll need to get a battery door designed to allow connecting USB while closed. I've ordered one. Just search for "Hero 8 battery door." The alternative is to leave the battery door open, or off. I really don't like that choice. Either way, the camera isn't waterproof without the original door in place and closed.
I can't recommend any of the GoPro 6 series, because for a bit more you can get a 7, and for a bit less, you can get a 5 Black. I bought the 8 instead of another 7 because the price dropped to within $40 of the 7, and there are several improvements. Before you buy any of them, do some research into what each can and cannot do. There are various video modes on each. The older models drop in price every time a new model comes out.

It can shoot 4K at 50/60 frames per second, and the image quality in this video mode is perfect on a bright day (but degrades a lot indoors and in the night - the noise becomes annoying once the ISO setting goes beyond 800). The electronic stabilization is great under a bright light. In dim light the electronic stabilization results into artifacts that ruin the image (so you should either use a gymbal, or mount it to a heavy stable object, or freeze when shooting your video). 2.7K seems to be a fake mode added for marketing purposes only - the quality looks the same as when upsampling the image shot in 1080. But the 4K video quality blows all competitor cameras away.

I bought this 8Hero Black to use when riding my motorcycle. I have it mounted to my helmet. I typically use the app on my cell phone mounted on my handlebars to control the GoPro. It also has the ability to use voice commands and a remote to record and stop recording. You can also mark special recording spots by voice which is useful for editing later. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the features of this model. You have to really do your homework when purchasing a GoPro to make sure it has the features you need for your intended use. Each model has its pros and cons. No matter which model you choose, you will require additional batteries as it really runs through them. The image stabilization is a must feature and really does a great job at smoothing out movement such as recording when walking. The internal mic does a very decent job at capturing the sound at a wide angle. If you want to use external devices with it you can depending on the model you choose, so do your homework and compare each model.

Hero 8 starter kit really does come with everything you need to get going. The App in the documentation is not the same on the app store (Most likely because the material has changed or is dated, but it is not hard to get the app installed - icon changed). The camera's maximum battery capacity will vary based on settings, environmental conditions, and other factors. A 1080P 60P video resolution will let you record an estimated 81 minutes.
The camera will work normally when powered from an external power source 5V 1A (5V 2A recommended for HERO8 Black, HERO7 Black, Silver and White, HERO6 Black, Fusion, HERO5 Black, and HERO5 Session) via USB-C cable. This is perfect for capturing long videos and time-lapse events.
Even though your camera is charging, the battery will not charge during recording. It will start charging when you stop recording. You cannot record while your camera is plugged into a computer.
You may also remove the battery if you will be using the camera while connected to a recommended charger for very long-term shooting (e.g. Timelapse) to prevent the camera from overheating.
Heads Up: Because the door is open, your camera is not waterproof when charging.
