Update on N52 Ball

I returned b/c ball did not move smoothly. In my original review I referred to it as "junk." It is not. There was a significant defect, but it is far from junk. UPDATE: The vendor contacted me immediately, apologized for the problem, and -- are you sitting -- offered unbidden to replace it at no charge with a newer, upgrade model, the N55. He also said there would be an additional "gift." Package arrived today. The ball is fantastic, as is the throw-in item, which I prefer not to identify. I could not be more pleased, not only with the product(s), but with the company. Not many vendors would offer a free replacement. Not many demonstrate the honesty and integrity of Innorel. What a tremendous exampled -- a super ethical company that stands behinds its products 100%, and takes prompt "make good" action. I salute Innorel! Thank you so much!

Rock solid with a heavy load, better than other much more expensive mounts!

Using this 52mm ball head with a heavy load - a DSLR and a medium format 600mm lens weighing about 13lbs total. Initially, I did not think a ball head would work with my heavy setup, so I first bought a Benro GH2 gimbal mount - which was quite good, but had some resonant vibration and also I had issues with my long 300mm arca plate (that supports the lens and camera in 3 places) hitting the gimbal mount base when tilted up, so the gimbal was not going to work. Next I tried an Acratech pan/tilt panoramic head, which cost 5x what the Innorel 52mm cost, and while It was nicely made, it too simply had too much vibration. With a 600mm lens on an APSC camera, with an effective focal length of 900mm, you really want as little vibration as possible!

Finally decided to get my $$ back on the other mounts, and try the Innorel 52mm low profile (mostly because I got an Innorel tripod that is great) and the ball head is ABSOLUTELY ROCK SOLID - I literally can hardly believe how well it is holding my heavy setup. With the friction lock fully tightened this mount simply does not vibrate AT ALL with my lens mounted (usually if you knock or tap a setup like mine it will ‘ring’ or vibrate, as it did with both the other mounts I tried), not so with the Innorel, it acts like the whole setup is literally bolted to the tripod.

The head itself is very nicely made - finish wise I don’t think it could be better. The friction lock works well with my *balanced* gear but obviously you need to take some care not to loosen it too much with a heavy load and the panoramic base turns smoothly. I am using this head on the Innorel RT90C Carbon fiber tripod, and could not be more pleased with both the tripod and the mount!

This is a legitimate review, from someone who purchased the product and received no compensation for this review, just so you know :)

Not a trouble free experience, but the seller made it right.

I was super disappointed in this. I bought it as it advertised as "low profile" an while it looks short and wide, it;s exactly the same height as my Oben ball head. It's also VERY heavy. The worst part is that the panoramic adjustment is unbelievably hard to turn, no matter where the knob is adjusted to....it takes TWO HANDS to move this thing on a tripod. The ball head is okay. It's not very smooth and it makes a bit of a scratchy noise while adjusting the ball to the desired position, but it seems to tighten down nicely. The ball sounds hollow. The device as a whole is very heavy, especially when compared to my Oben ballhead, which is just a basic head, and nothing fancy or expensive. I bought this "low profile" ballhead to use on my SkyGuiderPro star tracker, because it was supposed to be low profile for a lower center of gravity and light. It's neither, and added to the fact that is it impossible to adjust and would ruin my SkyGuiderPro gears if I tried to adjust it while on the tracker, I'm returning this and looking for an alternative low profile ballhead.
***Note: July 2020. The seller contacted me by email immediately after I posted this negative review and promised to send a replacement for this item, but it's been over 8 weeks and I have not received anything.
***Update: Nov 22nd, 2020. Seller contacted me again a few weeks ago, "shocked" that the replacement had not arrived yet and promised to send a new one if I would update my bad review to 5 stars. Well, I'm not updating a thing unless I have a product in hand that I am elated with. ......and still, no new ball head has arrived after me giving them my mailing address more than 3 times. Buyer beware.
****UPDATE December 28th, 2020: Seller contacted me again a week or so ago, and said they were shipping out a new ball head AND some extra items. I got the package today. The new ball head is great. It moves smoothly and holds tight. This is what I was hoping to get in July when this all started. They seller also included a small tabletop tripod and a camera strap. It seems they really do want to make things right for the customer and they especially value reviews. I'm upgrading this to a 5 star rating because the new item is exactly what I originally wanted and it works great. Please note, this transaction has clearly not been without issues, but the seller has gone to a considerable amount of effort (at their expense) to make good on their product. I would buy from them again if I needed to.

Excellent built quality

The built quality of this ball head is on par with expensive well known brands yet 1/6th 1/7th of the price. There are no sharp edges, perfect anodizing and smooth motion of the head. Adjustment knob is big smooth enough so that you can set the tension as you want or if you want a solid rock fix, just turn the know a little more. (FYI:There is no tension adjuster knob - the third knob on some pictures on the web - I don't use that feature anyway and you can use the main knob for same purpose). Arca swiss mount is screw version which I prefer, it is long enough to make a sturdy attachment and it has standard catches. Please look at the pictures this is the largest ball head, it is a little bit overkill for a mirrorless camera but if you use long or big lenses it is worth the purchase. It made a perfect combo with Innorel RT-80C with 65mm bowl head mid section. I have 3-4 expensive, mid range ball heads and fluid head but I think this one will be my favorite.

Feels good, quite sturdy

I always discount reviews which are first impressions straight out of the box, but here I am doing exactly that.

Backstory: I'm a semi-pro shooter, I've used a 25mm ballhead on my trusty old Manfroto 3021 tripod with Manfrotos quick release for about 18 years. I recently shot a night-time panorama, and came away unsatisfied with this rig's stability.

My older ballhead was a well-rated, mid-priced pro-grade product. This new ballhead cost is about 2/3 the price (and that was in 2000s money!)

It's sturdier, it's machined much nicer, it has an additional motion (the base will rotate for panoramas and is marked in 5° increments) and the action of the knobs is quite smooth and pleasing. The larger-diameter 52mm ball makes the lockup much more secure.

One of the selling points for me was the two included baseplates which makes for an easy upgrade to the Arca-Swiss pattern quick release clamp, which is better designed and more stable than the Manfroto quick release.

Even with a 90° baseplate, and a 200mm nodal baseplate (for panoramas), the camera is held quite firmly. I'm very impressed.

My sole concern is the durability of the markings: they appear to be painted on, rather than engraved.

I will check back, after I've used this ballhead a bit, if my opinion changes.

Excellent value and quality

As a retired mechanical engineer, I have an eye for quality and value in mechanical products. This product is an excellent value and appears to be of excellent quality. If there is a change to my evaluation after use, I will update this review. The manufacturer changed the configuration of the quick release plates immediately after I received this unit to include 1/4" to 3/8" quick release plates. Mine came with the 1/4" quick release plates. I would have appreciated the 3/8" option given the 66 pound load rating of this unit. I mated this head to their RT90C carbon fiber tripod, also an excellent value that is incredibly solid with an 88 pound load rating. I would recommend both of these products without hesitation. Again, if my opinion changes, I will update this review.

Almost perfect.

This should really be a 4.5 review. It's really good but not perfect.

I will compare it to a RRS BH-55 that I already own.

This ballhead is smaller, probably BH-40 size. I can make it wiggle when totally locked but takes quite a bit of effort. Used it on a studio arm with a D850 with grip fully loaded hanging off a Nikon 70-180 at 1:1 with the diopter added. Mirror was up.

No issues. It was rigid and held everything properly. I haven't used it with my 70-200 but anticipate that there will be no problems with that lens either.

They've obviously copied the RRS ball movement layout for laying the head over. That's nice.

There are two cons that prevent 5 stars. It doesn't have a tension knob. I didn't realize how nice or important using that knob was until I didn't have it. It means I have to be a little more careful with this head. Also, the pan base is stiffer than I like. Very stiff. Will it get looser? Don't know.

Weirdness:. I put a long 3/8 bolt in it before mounting it just to feel the quality of the threads. The bolt went all the way into the ball. It was curious and limited the balls ability to move around of course. Be aware of this if you are going to mount it in weird places to get remote work done and get too long a bolt.

A decent ball head with commendable customer service

I purchased this ball head over 3 months ago. I found that the arca-swiss base plate attached to the ball head cannot be removed, which prevented me from installing some equipment directly to the ball head. I made a complain to the company with no response. The ball head is quite durable (so far) and can certainly bear 8-lb weight in a 45 degree tilted position with no issues. Last week, I received an email from the company to apologize for the delayed response because the message I sent was accidentally “ignored” due to their open-mailbox email address. They said they will send me a new ball head with no plate installed on it and the base-plate screw will not be glued to the ball head. Surely, they did send me a new ball head a week later and the base-plate can be removed freely. However, I didn’t realize that there is a notch protruding out from the stem of the ball head to anchor the base-plate. Nevertheless, the customer service is excellent and corrected the oversight effectively and efficiently. I can easily put a shim to solve the notch issue. Now I can install some equipment onto the ball head directly. I thank the company for reaching out to me and solved my issue actively. By the way, they sent me a tripod gimble head to compensate my inconvenience, which was a nice consideration.

Exactly What I Hoped It Would Be

I wanted a sturdy, simple-to-use ball-head mount for a full-sized dSLR and a monster Sigma 60-600 mm zoom lens. This one does the job. It's solid, sturdy, straightforward, and doesn't slip even at extreme angles -- exactly what I was looking for.

One cautionary note: it is possible to run the tripod mounting screw far enough up into the mechanism to interfere with its movement, so be careful of that when you assemble it.

Well made, glad I bought it.

This ball gimbal has more strength than expected. It’s well engineered and well machined. The tolerances are exceptional. The fit, and finishing is remarkable enough to be proud of when it’s set up as part of my Newley assembled kit which includes the legendary Nikon D850. This assembled kit includes a Nikkor 200-500 which along with the camera and battery grip demands very robust accompanying accessories.
Glad I bought it.
