A must have accessory for the Canon EOS 5D!
This Cannon battery grip is a great addition to the EOS 5D Mark III camera I put it on. It expands the utility of the camera and gives it the look of a professional tool. The base is a grip with an extra set of shutter and control buttons so the camera can be comfortably operated in landscape or portrait mode. Inside the base is a tray for up to two batteries allowing you to effectively double your battery life. The status of both batteries is monitored by the camera. The grip secures to the camera through the tripod mount and has a tripod mount of its own. The battery door of the camera must be removed to use this grip but it can be easily popped back on if needed.

A must have for big hands!
As a professional wedding photographer, I shoot thousands of images every week. After retiring one of my old cameras and picking up a 5DmkIII, I had to wait to get the battery grip since my local camera shop was sold out. Using it without the grip is awkward, since I've always either shot with 1D series bodies or 5DmkII's with battery grips. I have relatively large hands, being 6-feet tall, and though my hands fit on the standard body just fine, the camera just doesn't feel as comfortable without it. Not having the vertical shutter release is also awkward when shooting, so this grip was a necessity. I like the design of this grip, the added joystick is perfectly placed and I use it to move my focus points while shooting vertically, just as I would with the joystick on the camera itself. Construction feels much sturdier than the battery grip for the 5DmkII, and the battery compartment has been redesigned to a magazine style that will pull out and hold 2 batteries. Also included was a separate magazine that accepts AA size batteries should you be in a pinch and don't have standard batteries available. All in all, I love this product, it exceeded my expectations, and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a battery grip for their 5DmkIII. Stick with OEM when it comes to grips, you won't be disappointed!

this one is great. I have this on two of my Canon ...
As with all of the battery grips I have which are made by Canon, this one is great. I have this on two of my Canon EOS 5D Mark III's and this newest one purchased is for the new Canon EOS %DS"R" which I will be getting on Wednesday from Amazon.
Since the body on the new EOS 5DS and 5DS "R" 50.6 mega pixel medium format DSLR are the same as the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, this battery grip (as well as the Really Right Stuff L-Plate) will work on these new cameras.
There are other knock off versions of the Canon Battery Grips but let's face it, when you pay $4,000 and upwards to $5,500 for a camera body, it is well worth the extra money to get the original end manufactured accessories for that camera. They look better, feel better, operate better and I think last longer than the cheap knock offs.

As expected.
I count on extended grips for most of my DSLR's. I like the more secure grip options. And unlike some, I find the added weight stabilized the camera more and keeps some of those 'border-line' images sharp. Lighter cameras are only better while you carry them. Heavier cameras shoot sharper.
Unlike my other system (Nikon), Canon prices the grips appropriately.
This one from Amazon came packaged well, and works perfectly. It differs from the one for the 5D2 in that the battery slides in from the long axis into a small door on the left-hand instead of using a wide door under the camera back that the 5D2 grip has. I don't see any real reason for the difference, but it doesn't look like an issue either way.
I've heard from other shooters trying to save money by purchasing off-brands, and then having intermittent problems.
I make my living from photography, so if getting the shot is important to you as well; buy the Canon brand.

Can't do without it.
OK...like all genuine Canon products, totally overpriced. And, of course they change with every model so you have to replace many of your accessories when you upgrade or replace your camera. But, after your wallet has been drained by the price of the camera, this is just an accessory. If your EOS MK III wasn't already heavy enough with a lens hanging off of it, this accessory just adds more weight (Use a strong neck strap with this attached). But, although you could do without it, why would you want to. It fits well in the hand, eliminates twisting of the wrist to take vertical photos, helps balance the camera and gives you the twin battery power you need for extended shoots. Not only that, but you can use the AA battery adapter if you ever run out of charged batteries. I have never had to do that, but a good photographer always carries fresh AA batteries for flash and other accessories.
If you don't feel the need for one then save your money. But, I have grown used to having one on every Canon SLR and DSLR I have ever owned.

A nice addition if you need the extra power (or shoot a lot in portrait orientation)
This grip doubles your battery power and gives you a lot of control in portrait orientation, but you pay a "price" in terms of camera bulk. It makes an already large camera pretty huge. But the added bulk is worth it if you need the extra power and/or if you shoot in portrait mode a lot. The added controls in portrait orientation are amazing...you get the added shutter button and 8-way control knob and other camera controls. Also, in portrait orientation, the grip feels amazingly "right". It is a joy to shoot in portrait orientation with this grip attached. I find the added controls and the perfect feel of the grip to be the two main reasons I use this grip over and above the added power. Once you shoot portrait with this grip attached, it is difficult to go back to the old way of doing it. I personally don't mind the extra bulk given that this is not a pocket camera to begin with. I don't envision a lot of people will find this a necessary accessory to their camera, but for many shooters, it will be a useful, if not indispensable, addition.

Simply the best battery grip!
Excellent product by Canon that provides a great option on extended battery life.
I appreciate the fast delivery. (I purchased on Monday afternoon choosing FREE delivery and I got the package on Wednesday afternoon). The battery grip fits perfectly with 5D Mark iii. There is no virtual gap or shape/material mismatch. All features are fully functioning. Solid-built metal alloy cast body gives you extra confidence during use. You will not encounter any "bad contact" or "battery not being recognized" problem. It is worth the money to get a genuine brand product!

Significantly better than the cheap grips!
Don't cheap out and buy a third party battery grip. Those <$100 battery grips sounds like a good idea - I mean why not? You save over 50% versus the Canon battery grip. Well my Vello battery grip started falling apart piece by piece (and I baby my camera too!). First it was the joystick, then the AF area select, finally the AF-on/off button broke which is the final straw for me. I spent more money than I intended by purchasing the Vello grip. Do it right the first time and get the Canon battery grip.

but now that I have it am glad I did
I was not sure if I wanted to drop the $$ on another gadget, but now that I have it am glad I did. I shot > 1,000 high resolution images plus video over a 3 hour period and did not get below 70% charge. I am also shooting more portrait frames now because it's easier to hold the camera in that position. So it does what it should, I just have a better appreciation for the benefits than I did before I bought it.

Question & Answer
Question :
It uses two batteries, suppose it use right one first then the left one. If you use 2nd one a long time, will the right one dead due to uncharged?
Answer :
The battery will be dead until you charge it, but the grip takes power from both batteries at the same time, so you wouldn't have a situation where one is dead and the other is not unless there was something wrong with the battery.
Question :
The listing's a little vague. Does this come with a magazine for two LPE6 batteries as well as a magazine for AA's?
Answer :
It comes with two cartridges. One accepts two 5D batteries. The other cartridge accepts AA batteries and needs 6 of them to operate.
Question :
Will this also fit the new 70D?
Answer :
The grip for the 70D is the BG-E14
Question :
Can anyone comment / has anyone used Eneloop XX (AA sized batteries) with the EOS 5D Mk III + battery grip combo?
Answer :
I have not. I am using 2 Canon LP-E6 batteries that go with the camera. I have the AA Energizer Ultimate Lithium 9X for back-ups, they have an extremely long life for a one-use battery. If you are thinking of environmental or cost issues, I personally will still use the LP-E6's. Even though the cost is a little more I think they will have a longer overall life than the AA rechargeable and certainly have a stronger charge per shoot performance. Good Luck.
Question :
So the BG-E11 does not come with ANY batteries at all, correct?
Answer :
Yes
Question :
Is this the one with the mini joystick?
Answer :
Canon has specific battery grips for specific cameras. This one is for the Canon BG-E11 Battery Grip for EOS 5D Mark III, 5DS, & 5DS R. I have this and it has no "joystick." Search for the battery grip for your specific camera.
Question :
Does it fit my cannon 40 d ?
Answer :
No this is for the 5D Mark 3, the one you want is the BG-E2N. Link on Amazon here. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Battery-Digital-Cameras-Package/dp/B000VUIXOO/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1384531269&sr=1-1&keywords=BG-E2N
Question :
Is this made out of magnesium alloy instead of plastic?
Answer :
Yes. The Canon battery grip is made out of the same material as the camera body and the same grip material as well. Having used the third party plastic grips, the Canon version is worth every penny.
Question :
So, what is the difference between this grip and the "canon bg-e11 portable battery vertical grip 283" that sells for $450 from canon???
Answer :
This is the grip (BG-E11) by Canon for the Canon 5D Mark III. If that is the camera you have, this is the grip for you. Is Canon selling this for $450 (the "portable battery vertical grip 283" is just keyword language for internet searchers in my book)? Then it might be because it has been discontinued, since the battery grip for the new 5D Mark IV is the BG-E20. There are no different "grades" of Canon-made battery grip. I would recommend buying only the Canon-made grip. Aftermarket choices are both inferior AND have no resale value. (Now the $450 might be a manufacturer's suggested retail price. Don't pay it.)
Question :
Does canon battery grip bg-e11 work for canon eos 5ds-r dslr camera?
Answer :
Yes, the Canon BG-E11 Battery Grip works with the EOS 5D Mark III, 5DS, & 5DS R.
