Good for retro computers! Used it on an NEC PC-98.

I used this card in conjunction with a Syba Dual Compact Flash CF to 44 Pin IDE adapter on my NEC PC-9821Nr15 laptop that I imported from Japan. If you know how to get it set up, this can be a very convenient way to transfer files without a floppy or CD drive. (Use a tool called CONV98AT to make the card compatible with both the PC-98 and modern computers). For an easy set up, image the YAHDI disk image (which can easily be found by googling) to the card.

I partitioned it to have MS-DOS 6.2 and Windows 98SE, and it works like a charm. The speed is adequate, though not super fast by any means. Considering how this laptop can't support hard drives much larger than 4 GB (4.7 GB max, I think), my options for a suitable hard drive replacement were limited. Regardless, this can act as a good hard drive alternative for retro computers. I can't guarantee it'll work on all kinds of retro computers, but I can at least confirm that it works good on newer NEC PC-98 computers.

PS: If you install a Windows 9x OS on one of these CF cards, do this tweak to help prolong the lifespan of the card.
This helps prevent overuse of the pagefile in Windows, which normally creates excessive writes to the card. With this tweak, the PC will use all of its available RAM before paging.

*Open C:\Windows\System.ini in Notepad.
*In the [386Enh] section of the file, on a new line type: ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1 (leave a single blank line between the last line in [386Enh] and the next section)
*Save the file and Reboot for changes to take effect.

nice doing business with you over there at Transcend

4 years later and it is still functioning as it should.
Although it should mentioned as I have a few of these cards that it is not being used full time, with that being said; if you are a hobbyist photographer on up, it is most advisable to have three to four cards all at different sizes and makes so that you may see any indifference's between them to fit your particular needs!
BTW, and FYI, received this card in record time, nice doing business with you over there at Transcend!

Use your Camera to Format the Card

I purchase this for my Canon Rebel XT which I primarily use for my outdoor activities photos; like camping, hiking, kayaking, scenic, and etc. Rarely do I use this camera for sport shots so the card's speed is not as much of a concern for me. Initially I verified I could write and read file from the new card using my PC and taking a few shots with the camera, everything appeared fine. But during its first field use after about 5 shots the camera displayed an error. It occurred to me the volume format or block size on the card may not be compatible with the camera. So I used the camera to immediately format the card in the field. The Rebel XT recognized the card size and correctly formatted it. After that I had no further problems and took about 50 photos that day. I did do a few burst photos and the speed appeared to be very good. Download speed through my PC's card reader was super fast. Those people that have poor download speed should verify their card reader and PC supports at least USB 2.0, USB 3 would be better, and the hard drive speed in their PC is 7200 RPMs. USB 1 or a slow hard drive can greatly increase download time. Also keep in mind a real time virus scanner can increase download time too. Since the volume format and block size on the card can affect write performance those concerned about photo transfer time to the card may want to verify they used the camera to formatted the card. The camera's programming should pick the correct volume format and block size for the best performance. Before performing the format you may also want to verify your camera is using the latest firmware version, if not consider updating it. As far as reliability only time will tell.

Great Compact Flash

I was looking to give my Nikon D300 greater capacity for picture storage as I shoot everything at the highest resolution and while the Transcend name was new to me, I have found that the card works perfectly.

My old card was a 4 GB (Kinsington) card I purchased a few years ago—which cost a lot more than the new Transcend 8 GB. I am a "weekend" photographer, so my demands for memory cards are minimal. I just need the card to work and to be reliable.

I was primarily concerned about the speed of writing to the card when taking pictures with the Nikon, and overall compatibility, and so far so good.

I did a test of about 15 quick exposures and the D300 took about a minute to finish writing to the card.

Typically I take landscape photographs and I don't do a lot of rapid fire exposures. I have no idea if the speed of the writing to the card is controlled more by the camera or the writing speed of the flash card.

If you are looking for a great value, or "more bang for the buck" I can recommend the Transcend 8 GB 133x CompactFlash Memory Card.

Excellent card, excellent price.

I think if people would read reviews about what items like this are best for, there would be far fewer unhappy people when it comes to a purchase like this. I purchased two of these for my older Canon Rebel dSLR, as while searching for them and reading reviews, someone happened to mention that this was best for older items, such as my camera. I stopped looking at that point and immediately got two of them, in anticipation of a long camping trip to Yellowstone next month.. I take lots of photos, and actually ran a 2gb card out of space on a short trip last month. I have tested both of these out and they work great, I don't really know what else to say about them except that... they work as I would expect them to. Anyone having complaints that it's not working for them, I don't know why you think the shipping return isn't worth it.. if there is truly a problem with it, Amazon covers the return shipping, not you.

Reliable Memory For Slow Paced Photography

I use the faster 400X and 600X Transcend CF Cards for sports/action photography, but for macros and still studio work, this card shines and does all that is needed. This is a great value for anyone needing a good reliable memory card and who does not need the blazing fast speeds of the 400 and 600X CF Cards.

I bought two of these 8 GB cards back in March of 2010 and they've proof to be reliable good performers... and I just bought two more as well as a 32 GB one that I've been using to good effect for just over 5 weeks now. I often have to work two or more flower shows and will even work in the studio the same night shooting still... so I pull one out and pop another in and down load my files for editing on a free day. I've use these cards in my Nikon D300s, D3s, D700 and D800 without fail or any issues at all.

Download time is "not" a major factor... it takes a little more time but nothing earth shaking, and certainly nothing like some of the absurd claims I've heard/read from some reviewers of 45 mins or more to download 8 GB of files. I use 2.0 and 3.0 Card Readers from Kingston and Transcend, and it takes a "FEW" more minutes at best to download a full 8 GB Card. The only issue with these 133X CF Cards is you may have to wait for few seconds after firing off a bunch for full quality RAW Files in burst mode, so they're not for the sports photographer, fashion shoots, air shows or any other fact action work. Buy for landscapes, architecture, macro, stills and portraits... they are just fine.

Replacement for an iPod Mini 4GB hard drive

I got this to replace the hard drive in an old 4GB iPod Mini I use in my car. The hard drive was still working, but I got tired of reloading music and never having the selection I was in the mood for. When I opened the thing up, I noticed that the cable interface to the hard drive was exactly like the connector on a Compact Flash card, so I gave it a try with a CF card I had lying around and it worked. Then, when I saw this card, with 8 times the storage capacity of the hard drive, for around $45, I had to go for it. I couldn't be happier with it. Unlike the hard drive, this card lets the iPod load the music almost instantly. There was always a delay with the hard drive--sometimes a minute or more--when I first turned it on in the morning, and I'm sure this thing is less of a drain on the iPod's aging battery. So if you have an old iPod lying around with a bad drive or one that's just too small, upgrade it with one of these. As long as it's a model that uses the 1" microdrive, it should fit, and it might even work in the bigger ones, but I'm not sure.

Functioned as expected, decent value ~ buy it!

FUNCTION: I used this CF card to replace the micro-drive in a 4gb iPod mini... it was a simple plug-and-play, the micro drive connector was the same as for CF, so it just plugged right in. Once I reassembled the iPod, it powered right up. Plugged it in iTunes, let it reformat the drive and reload the OS on it,.. and I was up and running again, loading music, within about 30 minutes. That included disassembly, install of CF card and new battery, reassembly, reformat and off we go! Totally easy fix and expanded my iPod by a factor of 8x! One additional bonus.. since I am now using solid-state memory as opposed to a spinning micro-drive,.. my batter lasts longer.

VALUE: Most decently priced CF card in 32gb size.. I bought it for $38. Also, Transcend is a quality name that I trust.. worth something.

WOULD I BUY IT AGAIN?
Absolutely, and the iPod mini upgrade is a project that I would also suggest for others to try. Minimal investment for a large return.

Transcend always delivers good quality, good value products

I've been buying Transcend memory for years and they have always been super reliable. Always cheaper than Sandisk and usually cheapest on the market, but I never found them to be lacking in quality. Been running many of these CF cards for years ion my devices.

Not just for cameras anymore

I like to tinker. I bought one of these, hoping to swap out the 4 Gb Microdrive in my RCA Lyra mp3 player. Also bought some different CF-to-IDE adapters to try. Ultimately, I wasn't able to get it to work in the RCA player (they really boogered-up the microdrive when they designed the player). All was not lost, however...

The drive comes formatted, with a single Fat 32 partition. I Ghosted the microdrive and ended up with a 4 Gb partition on the Trancend card, which still didn't work in the RCA. Not to worry. I learned that my iPaq pocket PC has a Compact Flash slot, and makes an excellent 4 Gb mp3 player. Using an adapter (also purchased here on Amazon), I was able to plug the drive directly into an IDE header, and use a W2K install CD to re-partition and format a new 8 Gb FAT 32 partition. I was AMAZED at how fast the drive partitioned and formatted. (The drive's paperwork states that it supports Ultra33 IDE speeds - not blazing speed, but not bad, either.) As soon as I finish loading the drive again, I will have an excellent 8 Gb mp3 player.

Bottom line? Excellent value for the price. Will work fine for all but the most demanding applications.

Question & Answer

Question :

Can I use this card for my Roland Fantom X keyboard?

Answer :

I'm unfamiliar with the Fantom X as I play the electric guitar. However, in reviewing http://lib.roland.co.jp/support/en/manuals/res/1811531/Fantom-X678_r_eA.pdf, page 5 says it will accept CompactFlash memory cards. However, per http://www.musiciansfriend.com/resources/article/Roland-Fantom-X/m711821, it appears the keyboard has a PC card slot for data backup with a 1GB capacity so assuming this is a standard socket, you'd only be able to use 1GB of the 8GB available on the Transcend CompactFlash. Regarding speed, I use mine in a Canon camera capable of producing 6 raw frames a second so this should be no problem in the Roland environment.
Note that my response is not a wholesale blessing for the use of the subject Transcend CompactFlash memory card, but it appears it will work though you'd only be able to use 12% of its capacity (1GB of 8GB). Hope this helps. Good luck.

Question :

Does this work for the Canon 40d?

Answer :

The Canon 40D is meant to use a Compact Flash card of up to 32GB; so this should work just fine. My experience with my Transcend card has been flawless.

Question :

Will 8GB or 16GB work with the Canon EOS 300D?

Answer :

The camera specs say the camera supports up to 8GB. Anything higher then 2GB however can slow the camera boot time, due to the camera reading a more complex file system. Basic funtions, lag has been reported, yet others say it is not noticeable enough to be an issue.
A 16GB card if used, the camera can only format 8GB and use 8GB only of the 16.
Hope this helps!

Question :

Will it work with Cannon G2?

Answer :

I have used a 4 gig in my G2 with no problems

Question :

Will this work with a Canon 5D mark 3? Or did I order the wrong type of Compact Flash card? Thanks.

Answer :

That should work fine with the 5D. You should get at least a 16GB because the size of the photos will be large. Have fun.

Question :

Can I use the 16 or 32GB versions of this card in my Sony A200? Thanks.

Answer :

Hi Justin- You should be able to if it is similar to the camera card that is in your camera now. To be sure, check your owner's manual. The types of cards that your camera will accept is usually listed in the beginning pages. Another way to find out if your camera will take this card before purchasing it, is to type the question in your search line. If anyone has had success with it and left a review, it will be pulled up and listed. I have used the Transcend products in Canon and Nikon cameras with no problems.

Question :

Does it work with Nikon D70

Answer :

as long as you can use flash...then it should work well....I have Nikon cool pix 2500 and it works very well with my camera.

Question :

Will this card work with my Canon EOS Digital Rebel 300D?

Answer :

Hi Zachary. That won't work with the 300D. You would need to get an SD card. You should get one with at least 8GB and preferably a 16GB one. They are smaller in size to the Compact Disk ones.

Question :

will this work in a nikon coolpix5400

Answer :

No, only 1GB has been tested and 2GB MIGHT work but nothing larger than that - https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5098/~/approved-cf-cards---coolpix-5400
