Unbeatable for the price vs quality.

I wanted to buy an external mic for my DSLR to take my video recording to the next level. I'm just getting into videography after five years of photography and don't have a huge budget. I was looking for an entry level mic to get my foot in the door and see how things worked out. After watching and reading a handful of reviews, I decided to spend a little extra (not the cheapest entry level mic on the market) and I'm glad I did. the sound quality out of this little thing is impressive. I've used it to record in everything from wind to a friend's food vlog in a crowded diner and it performs amazingly well.

RODE VideoMicro Review

This review page is combining a bunch of different products My review is of the VideoMicro.

I've tried SO much inexpensive audio equipment over the last couple years trying to find something decent for my small budget. Problem solved! The sound is a mile better than the popular Vidpro XM-55 or SGC-598 so if your considering those do yourself a favor and get this instead. It's also far simpler than using a TASCAM DR-60DmkII or post syncing with my TASCAM DR-40.

Just plug it in and get great audio.
It's camera powered - No forgetting to turn on the mic or running out of battery. That's s huge plus right there.

Its small, stays out of way, has a great wind screen (a good furry is typically almost the price of this whole microphone).
It's pretty decent directionally, doesn't pick up a lot of sound from behind the camera. I've got allergies right now and my stuffy breathing is barely picked up at all.

I primarily use it with my Canon 70D but it also mounts to my DJI OSMO via the Osmo - Quick Release 360° Mic Mount with great results.
I'll still need a Tascam with Lavalier mics or the Rode NTG2 for some demanding jobs, but I suspect the Rode VideoMico will be used quite a bit on its own too. The quality is great and it just makes life simpler.

Also my dog is obsessed with it since it's furry and jiggles in its soft-mount which makes for some fun footage ; )
He thinks it's a critter - so I cant leave it lying around!

First mic under $200 I've ever owned. Impressed.

Wow. I have a closet full of pro filmmaking gear but expanded it to include a GoPro Silver and EVO GP-Pro stabilizer. This mic turned that rig into a superb compact VLOG rig but also serves as an interview rig all because of the awesome sound from this directional mic. It does an excellent job of rejecting ambient sound. To mount it on the EVO, I used the EVO quick release extension mount accessory. That QR mount holds the VideoMicro shock mount shoe and the mic can easily be removed and flopped 180 for VLOG position and then for interview position. I used the MXL MM-C003GP audio cable. It's all a bit floppy and can sometimes overload the stabilizer motors but after tidying up the MXL adapter by molding the female jack to the mini USB jack at 90 degrees (pointing up), that greatly improved things. It would be perfect of RODE offered a cable for this model that could plug directly into the mini USB of the GoPro. Still gets 5 stars for great sound in an inexpensive mic with shock mount included. Does it sound like my expensive mics? No. But they can't touch this VideoMicro for size, weight and portability.

Terrific Mic! Check my photos to use properly

This mic is great especially for the low price. I prefer to use this over my Rode VideoMic Pro because it’s smaller and you don’t have to power it by a battery and turn it on/off. Sound quality is actually really good for a passive mic as long as your camera preamps are ok. I’m using a Sony a7iii and it sounds great. Go to YouTube and view my channel CJ Rich to hear this mic in action. Make sure you lock the red cable in the grooves on the screw attachment to hold the mic steady otherwise it will bounce so bad it will make an audible sound rendering the audio useless.

The 50mm lens of Microphones for single-person video shooting

Great little mic for the money. It mounts on a Canon 5DII/III/IV cam in about 5 seconds, is powered by the camera, and records nice clear audio direct and off axis (even picks up voice from behind cam clearly if doing interviews). Wind sock/muff a big plus. Shock mount a big plus. Lack of protruding back into your eyeball/forehead when framing shots through the optical finder a HUGE PLUS. >> Mics are "audio lenses" - for single person operation (no sound person) you should have one of these (equiv to a great cheap 50mm lens), as well as a good cam-mount shot gun (telephoto lens), and a nice cam-mount binaural mic (equiv to a super wide angle lens). Each should be as easy to grab/mount/swap-out as an optical lens. Match to scene/shot requirements.

There's A Reason These Are Popular

I'm a big Rode fan. Those Aussies know how to make mics. This is my third Rode mic.

There isn't much to say other than this mic sounds excellent (way better than any internal camera mic), and the horseshoe mount helps minimize handling noise. The dead cat windsock has a kind of lousy fit (pocket is too deep and too big), but it works. I'm not a fan of the coiled cable because it activates my eye viewfinder and turns off the rear screen (more of a Sony design fail, but Rode should have just given a straight 6-inch cable).

This mic will add a lot if you're a vlogger or do run-and-gun interviews in the field. If you are indoors a lot, I'd go with a large diaphragm condenser or dynamic mic just out of frame.

Incredible for Dictation

I have had this mic for about a month. I use it chiefly with Dragon dictation software at work with my iPhone X.

Note this will not work out-of-the-box because you need a TRS conversion plug to TRSS plug. If you need to charge your iPhone, you will need either a wireless charging pad (which does not charge very fast) or buy an adapter that allows you to charge your iPhone and accept a microphone input. Of course all of these adapters require special cables to connect the mic to the adapters to the iPhone. None of the cables or adapters are expenses. I just hated to wait for them to arrive, but then that's me.
.
.On many apps, such as the dictation app that I use, you will not be able to hear sound coming from the iPhone. In other words when I am in dictation mode, I cannot hear the phone ring or play music. However, GarageBand will let you use the mic and sound at the same time. So sound is very app dependent for the mic.

The sound quality is incredible to me. I am using it with my iPhone X. On a scale of 1 to 10 the iPhone mic is about an eight. The Rode mic is a 9 1/2.

To be honest I had some difficulty setting the mic up for my iPhone. This was not the problem of the mic but the problem of the user.

This is where the real value of a company's support people come into play. I must have spoken to Ryan three or four times until I understood what type of connections I needed for the mic to work. Ryan was patient, friendly, and quite talented. To be able to break down the instructions to a novice like me, is pure genius in my book.

Superior entry level mic quality

This mic is highly recommended by the big YouTube videographers as an excellent mic for iPhone and YouTube, and all my expectations were met. However, there are several points to comprehend:

1. This is not made specifically for smartphones, and does not include the required SC-7 cable. The Rode VideoMic Me model looks exactly like this model, and does include the correct cable, but cannot be used with any other device, like a Cannon M50 DSLR. This Video Micro can be used with any device, and I do plan on upgrading to a camera eventually.

2. I you are more than five or six feet away, consider a BOYA lav mic with a long cable. You have to be pretty close to this one, but that is the point of shotgun mics.

3. get some screw adapters (3/8" to 1/4") for your kit, and you will find mounting possibilities open up for tripods, boom poles, etc

Works Great With My Mic Adapter and Hero 7 Black

I use this microphone with a GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter on my Hero 7 Black and it works great. It has never let me down and I shoot a lot of outdoors video on my hiking excursions in the Shenandoah Mountains. Better than the internal GoPro Mic (which isn’t bad).

On my GoPro, I set the “Audio Input” to “Standard Mic” and I get superior audio quality. I jury-rigged a foam windscreen over the mic for those windy days. I also have a cat-tail I can use as well.

Harp isn't strong enough to consistently hold up the mic w/ the windscreen on.

I purchased this to record sound while I shot a You Tube travel series on my iPhone 12 Max Pro. It works well for sound quality and I haven't had any problems with it technically. There are a two issues to be aware of though. One is that the cord attachment will sometimes tap the phone, which is picked up in the recording. You don't hear it at the time your recording though, so make sure to tape the cord down, or twist the cord out of the way and remind yourself to check it between shots. The second issue, is the wind screen (the fuzzy sock over the mic), is a little too heavy for the harp, so sometimes it drops into the shot. I use this to record on my iPhone 12 max pro, that is in a cage, which I used for attachments. To avoid seeing the wind screen, I set the mount farther back on the camera cage. IF you find that some of your shots do end up having the wind screen in the frame, you can zoom in a little in editing to cut it out. Good luck.

SmallRig Handle Grip Handgrip for Zhiyun-Tech WEEBILL-S Gimbal with Cold Shoe Mount Built-in Wrench, Multiple Threaded Holes - BSS2636

Question & Answer

Question :

Does this come with everything seen in picture ? especially the audio cord ?

Answer :

The included cord Male TRS-Male TRS is basically for a DSLR.
I'm using an iPhone 7 Plus on a boom stand and I needed to by a 15' Male TRS-Male TRS cable with a Female TRS-Male TRRS adapter. Only took me 2 days to figure that out.
TRRS (Tip Ring Ring Sleeve) was the key, then connected that to an Apple dongle (Female 3.5mm to Lightning). Your welcome :)

Question :

do you need an adapter for it to work with a smart phone?

Answer :

If your going to use it with an iPhone, then you'll want to also buy the Rode SC7 3.5mm TRS to TRRS Patch Cable. Otherwise it should work fine as is with other smartphones.

Question :

Does this come with any kind of wind cover for the mic?

Answer :

Yes

Question :

compatible to fujifilm x

Answer :

The X-T20, X-T30, X-E3 and X100F have combined 2.5 mm microphone/remote control inputs, you need an adapter cord. The X-T2 and X-T3 have a 3.5 mm microphone input and a separate 2.5 mm remote control input, no adapter needed.

Question :

Will this work on my iphone 7 plus mounted on a osmo mobile 2?

Answer :

You will need extra cable to isolate the mic input. Like this one. https://amzn.to/2MNKplg
Or https://amzn.to/2MSIQTe
And a bracket or mount for the mic separately from the phone because the mic weight would be too much for the gimbal of the Osmo. And I did a small video how to help the osmo to deal with an Plus size phone. https://youtu.be/pJ8eDhXfmMI

Question :

Does this come with the patch cable to connect to my cell phone?

Answer :

Only the camera cable is included, the SC7 cable for the phone needs to be purchased separately

Question :

can this be used with an iPad?

Answer :

Possibly haven’t tried it.

Question :

Does this work tha a Sony a6000?

Answer :

No it doesn’t as the A6000 doesn’t have an audio jack.

Question :

Can i split the audio using a ycs basics 3.5mm splitter cable 1 female / 2 male to send it to both my phone and computer at the same time?

Answer :

Don’t see why not, have never tried it though.

Question :

does it work with sony ax35?

Answer :

This will
Work with any camera with a headphone jack, but to work with phones you will need an adapter Rode SC4 3 inches Microphone Cable
https://amzn.to/2vBI4Fb
But will even work with any GoPro as long as you have the adapter from GoPro
