Save some money over the OEM and consider buy this product from Vello

I love photography, and I've gotta say, good gear and equipment can be expensive. During a recent gear overhaul, I had an opportunity to evaluate several ETTL flash cords for my Canon cameras and flash units. I purchased a handful of inexpensive cords here and on my other favorite auction website (I'll let you guess the name). The Vello won hands down. Here's what I learned:

Pros:
1. Works great with E-TTL and TTL based cameras.
No fuss, no mess, it just works. Other cords I've used work intermittently in that sometimes they need to be reseated, and the connector can twist causing intermittent connection of the contacts.
2. Camera side mount features a weather seal, quick release, and metal base.
When you slide this onto your camera, the fit is solid, and connection is good. Removal is easy. I can't speak to the true weather resistance, but it looks like it would help in a rainy shoot.
3. Flash mount is metal, and fits well.
4. Flash base has a 1/4-20 hole or can be attached to any standard hot-shoe, cold-shoe, or rail. There is a plastic spin-nut that lets you tighten the mount if attaching this way.
5. Length coiled (the cord only) is 11 inches (I physically measured this). If you're using this on a bracket, there won't be lots of cable dangling around. Remember also that you can still stretch the coiled cord to about 28 inches (cord only) if you need to. I consider this a "Pro" while others may not.
6. Cost. An OEM "OC-E3" comes in at about $68, where this unit is about $18 - WOW

Cons:
1. The Flash base is plastic. Sadly, most are plastic - even the OEM version.
2. There is no PC port on the flash base. On some of the other cords I tried, having a PC port on the flash base was convenient for using non TTL flash heads that didn't have an option for using the flash shoe. If you're not doing this, then there's no reason to have this port.
3. There is no mention of the weather seal on the Vello. While the seal is there, and it feels good, it's up to you if you want to trust this to rain (If you're like me, you avoid getting your camera wet anyway)

That's it for now. I hope this review helps.

Neater than long Canon model

I wanted a flash cable that was shorter than the Cannon one I have, because the Canon cable dangles when I have the Speedlite and camera close together. This fits the bill. I tried it with my EL-1 yesterday, when it arrived. Works fine. I can't testify to its durability, but it sees solid.

Better value than Canon.

I can purchase two of these for the price of one Canon off camera hot shoe mount. Very sturdy
And durable. I shoot daily and these last at least one year unless a client bumps
The flash. It’s better that this breaks than a flash hotshot!!

Works as described.

Works just as they say it will work...and without a hitch.
ETTL/TTL...not a problem. Which obviously means that it also works fully manual.
No delay & no misfires.
Slides on and off the camera just like the OEM flash or cable...and the flash does the same on the other end.
Is it short? Yes, but that's the point. Sure, one could wrap a long cord around their bracket but unless one needs a longer cable...this one fits the bill.
If you're thinking you could mount the flash on a stand well away from the camera...this is not for you. OTOH, if you're trying to get the flash onto a bracket instead on on top of the camera...go for it.

Quality product!`

This is a well made Off-Camera-Cable that maintains full functionality with Canon dedicated flash units. The length is perfect for use on a low-profile flash bracket and its construction appears to be solid. I really like the solution they came up with for the "lock" on the end that attaches to the cameras shoe.

Excellent product for OCF

This is an excellent product for Off Camera Flash for Canon. The quick-mount is critical for attaching and detaching from the camera. Sturdy and durable.

Great alternative to the canon cable for off camera flash with a bracket or other device.

I decided to try this cable instead of the pricey canon cable as I don't do a lot of off camera flash work yet. I also got a flash bracket and the 1.5' cable is the perfect length without having to wrap with cord around the handle as I've seen some people do with longer cables. The connections seem good and works perfectly with my Canon 430exii flash. So far all TTL has been working just as good as if the flash was mounted on the camera so I'm happy. I was surprised with the build quality for the price and this will lead me to try other Vello products in the future.

Worth it!

I was surprised to find they had put metal on the part that goes to the flash and hooks into my flash/camera bracket. That was always plastic before and would break after several uses. Finally, it is a metal piece...someone was thinking when they changed that.

Question & Answer

Question :

Will this work on a Nikon.

Answer :

I use Canon, but probably would work on Nikon.

Question :

Will fit my cannon speelite 600ex-rt flash and cannon 40d eos?

Answer :

YES. I own several 40Ds, a 420EX, 580EX, 580EX-II, 600EX-RT and 2 of the VELLO TTL-OFF CAMERA FLASH CORD. Everything works. The Vello TTL-Off Camera Flash Cord works just as well as the Canon OCF cord, which I also have.

Question :

will it work with non-ttl flash, like TT560 speedlite?

Answer :

Great flash - works as described. Could not have asked for a better product for the price. I would buy it again if needed.

Question :

How high above the camera body is the top if the connector?

Answer :

Illuminate from the top of the camera.

Question :

Will this work with a Canon T3i?

Answer :

Question :

Will all functions work with the canon sl2 or d80 and canon 470ex-ai?

Answer :

Yes it will.

Question :

Will this provide a ttl connection between a canon 750d and a yonguno yn600ex-rt ii?

Answer :

750D ??

Question :

What else do I need to hook my 600ex-rt flash to a light stand?

Answer :

Note that this is a short cable, stretching no more than 18" or so. It's really meant to use with a 'flip flash' arm. Anyway, the end of the cable that attaches to the flash gives you 2 options for mounting the flash (once the cable is attached to the flash) - 1- a 1/4-20 female mounting socket, such as you would use with a tripod, or light stand, 2- a square slide in surface that locks with a locknut, basically replicating how the flash normally mounts to the camera.

Question :

Will this work with the Canon T6?

Answer :

In theory, yes. I purchased the cord because Fujifilm cameras uses the same hot shoe pattern as Canon. The cord works perfectly. That’s what I got...
