Outstanding tester monitor for previewing camera angles

This Wsdcam 5 inch TFT-LCD Screen 5-in-one Camera Tester Monitor makes installing wire cameras easier, and it is very complete, and well-built. We live by the shore at a tourist destination, and having a reliable surveillance system, is a must. Otherwise, we would never know how many of the incidents that affect our property happened. However, maintaining these cameras required some effort, specially because these are the wire types. I prefer these because I had another set that are wireless (IP cameras), and those function, but are less reliable and durable than the wire types.

The issue is that when one camera goes off, I need to test it, and now with this Wsdcam Camera Tester, my task had become very easy. Specially because it includes a replaceable and rechargeable battery, and it allows me to connect the camera in question directly into the monitor tester. And this is great both for testing, and for previewing the camera angle to be captured. Therefore, cameras installation had become extra easy.

I also like that this monitor is compatible with the two set of DVR recorders we own. The oldest set, and more reliable, has BNC connectors and VGA output display. And if I every need to test the main monitor this tester would do. And the new DVR has a HMDI output. Again, this tester monitor is compatible with both. So, I’m very pleased with this.

This monitor includes everything needed to test the camera, also to figure out if it’s the wire the problem, which in my case usually had been. And the quality of this monitor is outstanding, it transmits a clear image and sound. It includes a storage case too.

Very useful video and network cable tester

Compact, battery powered tester with a USB cable rechargeable lithium battery pack. This unit acts as a small display for VGA, HDMI, or BNC cameras (SDI and AHD) and video output devices and auto detects the resolution. Display is just 800x400 but it can handle a full HD signal at 60hz. User interface is easy to navigate and there's a lot of functionality in this little device. The resolution is high enough to use it as a Windows 10 display if needed for setup and maintenance on headless PC systems.

The cable tester is basic but has a nice graphical display to quickly show if all wires are properly connected, great for making or testing cables. There is a built in light with 2 brightness levels and it's fairly bright and eliminates the need to carry a separate flashlight in many cases when working in darker environments.

This tool comes with a nice semi card case along with several cables, but no HDMI or VGA cables. The unit is meant to be handheld and can sit on a table but it's wobbly because one side is deeper than the other due to the battery pack. It's not that big of a deal, they took the Apple approach of having it be as thin as possible even though it's not symmetrical.

Overall, this tester is easy to use, has decent shock protection to protect from drops, and is great to have on hand to quickly test various video signals and network cables. Battery lasts over 5 hours and can be used while recharging. Aside from not supporting IP cameras, this has every feature I need in a basic handheld display unit. Quality is good, no issues at all using it.

Great Tool For A Professional

I ordered the Wsdcam Camera Tester because I had an immediate need to test several Cat 5 cables, which this device can do, and also because I need to test a 20-camera CCTV system that is acting up. I decided that I would do the testing on my own rather than hire an outside company. I have not yet gotten to the CCTV system, so my review will be based on the cable tests that I ran, and on the unit overall. My assumption is that this device will work as advertised for those areas that I have not tested.

The kit comes with the handheld tester, charge cord and wall adapter, cable tester, four connection cables, neck strap, carrying case, and a manual. The tester is powered by a 5200 mAh Li-Ion battery good for 6.5 hours operating time, with a 4 hour recharge time, according to the manufacturer. The tester’s case is good for carrying the tester and its components, and it should protect the tester from light abuse that it might be subject to during transportation.

The tester has a 5 inch color LCD screen that has decent enough imaging for this device’s purpose. It is not a touch screen despite having that appearance when powered on. The set of keys on the side of the screen control all functions and selections of the tester, and they work well. There is a built in work light that is handy when working above the ceiling tiles. The tester has eight different input connections where cameras and other devices that are being tested can be plugged in. There is a 12-volt DC output that can be used to power devices being tested. Lastly, there is a USB Type Mini-A used to charge the tester’s battery. A suggestion to the manufacturer is to change this connection to a USB-C connector so that a more standard cable can be used to charge the device.

I used the camera tester to check the integrity of several CAT 5 computer cables that I suspected might be defective. By plugging one end of the cable into the tester and the other end into the included cable tester terminator block, the tester provided information on the quality of the cable, its connectors, and its wiring schematic. One of my cables tested bad, and the others were okay.

The tester also verifies input signals from devices, so out of curiosity I tested the HDMI output connection from my laptop. I connected a HDMI cable to the tester and to my laptop, and the laptop signal displayed on the tester. This process is similar to how the camera tester verifies the output of the cameras being tested.

This is a very useful device for testing whether CCTV cameras, cables, or control devices are malfunctioning. It can also test the quality of a camera’s audio input. There are a myriad of other tests and features that are packed into this device, much more than I will ever use, but for a professional CCTV repair person, I believe that this camera tester will serve them well.

Helped me solve a problem faster.

My uncle has a mechanic shop with a number of cameras that have been installed over the years one or two at a time. He had a number of cameras that he'd simply ignored because he didn't know if the problem was in the cables, or the assortment of connectors, or what.

This made troubleshooting go so much faster because for the most part, I was able to leave the cameras in place and spot test them. It turns out that most of his cameras were fine, so I was able to save him some cash and get his system back to the full eight-camera setup, and he even ended up with a spare. All he would have to do was run new wires. And on one broken camera, the wire was fine, so a swap with a known working one set things right.

I'm sure I could have figured the same thing out by removing each camera and taking them each back to the DVR to test, but this saved me a ton of trips up some tall ladders.

This screen was easy to use. Easy enough that a not-particularly technical person like me could muddle through. I know this gadget has more advanced features that I haven't used so I can't comment on those. The charge lasted the whole afternoon that I was at it.

Solid so far!

This has been an extremely useful tool for me, as a pro installer, I find myself using this on practically all jobs. I can use it as a monitor connected to the DVR/NVR when the client doesn't have a monitor connected, I used to have to lug around a old 19" monitor to do simple setup tasks but this is so much easier to hook up. It can also be used directly connected a POE camera providing it power so I can demo the potential view and night vision capabilities of a camera to a client. I can test Cat5e/6 cable and verify that it is wired correctly and check for line shorts. I can scan the entire network for connected cameras in case the NVR doesn't detect them on a different subnet. Lots of IP camera and other network utility apps to be able to setup and configure cameras and even do password resets. This one also has the ability to work on all older style/non-ip cameras (see the two BNC jacks vs one on other units) like SDI, TVI, HDCVI etc. It's also a pretty well balanced size, the screen is big enough to see clearly but not too big to use at the top of a ladder. A great purchase and one I would definitely buy again.

Wsdcam 5 inch LCD Screen Camera and Cable Tester

I am using this tester to quickly identify defective cables and equipment in a variety of applications—for example HDMI/VGA video cables, USB drives, Audio cables, Network cables and Analog security cameras. In the past I’ve spent a lot of time reconfiguring components when the problem was simply a faulty cable. So this tester allows me to work more effectively and so far results are impressive.

Network Cables. I tested several UTP Ethernet network cables with RG-45 connectors and the device’s screen display showed a network diagram, the speed of the cables and whether or not they were defective or useable. This permitted me to identify the type cable and if it was good or needed repair or replacement. Testing is easy there is an included plug that goes on one end of the cable and the other end goes in the tester.

HDMI & VGA Cables. I have a number of cables on-hand and suspected some were non-operational and was also curious to know if as required for my specific TV I had actual high-speed cables connected. In testing several revealed they were defective, no picture, and I could confirm that my TV was connected with the specified high speed cable. Testing is easy just disconnect the cable from the TV and plug it into the tester, then select the proper cable and software from options on the device screen and the cable specs are displayed.

Audio Cables. I have a big bin of audio cables and suspected some in the group were defective. Testing is easy—plug one end of the audio cable into a sound source and the other end into the tester. If operational the tester’s built-in speaker will play the sound.

USB Drives. The device confirms if a USB drive is operational and also permits a review of the contents. There were a couple of minor issues—the device did not detect whether the drive is USB 2 or USB 3—it identified them all as USB 2. I don’t know but this may change with a future update. Also, the manual states to use the Media Player option on the screen for USB testing which at the time of this review is actually the Document option.

Analog Cameras. Using the included adapters I connected it to an analog camera in my home security system to first position the camera and then check specifications to ensure the camera and cable were operating correctly. For example the screen displayed that the camera and cable were delivering 1080p at 30 FPS.

Included with the device is a hard shell storage case, network cable test tool, AC power adapter with an included USB A to USB micro cable, a wrist strap, a lanyard and 4 adapter cables. Battery charging time to full capacity was 3 hours and after testing all of the above only half the charge was depleted. Excellent functionality—saves time and money.

Time saver, and a great screen

I wish that I would have had this before I ran some network cable along my roof this summer! The cable check function works great and can save you some frustration, for sure. The screen is also very nice, much nicer than I expected, actually. I've only used it for HDMI video and the built in menus, but it looks great. Very convenient to orient cameras without needing to get off a ladder and check the main system screen.

This is targeted more for folks that install gear on a regular basis, but even as just a regular home owner, I could almost justify the price because of the time savings. I have a smaller house and yard, but I'm the only human in the house, so I spend a lot of time going back and forth to set things up by myself. And that cable...grrrr...I could have checked it another way, sure, but this makes it so easy and would have saved me enough time to justify it for that alone.

So, I see this as really handy if you set up cameras for a living, and maybe you already have something good to help. I also see this as justifiable for any home owner looking to set up a wired security system.

Very nice camera, cable, HDMI, etc tester. Not for IP cameras, though

This HD CCTV Tester functioned as I expected. On the listing for this product here, it is clear about it being for analog, and not IP camera set-ups, so keep that in mind.

This device arrived packed well. Inside the cardboard box is the Tester in it’s zippered storage case. The case is of good quality, and is rigid. There is plenty of space inside the storage case, for extra cables, adapter, or whatnot you may want to keep in there. The instruction manual is decent, it’s not too thorough with explaining things, but it goes over the basics for many of the operations this CCTV Tester is capable of.

The device itself boots quick, and is easy to navigate. It also includes a built-in flashlight, which is a nice touch and pretty useful if you’re in a dim area, and have both hands holding this device, and need a bit of extra light. So far, I have tested this with a camera system someplace, that had no problems, I just wanted to make sure this HD CCTV Tester worked proper. Well, it did, I could move around some cameras.

I also tested the HDMI on this, and it functioned just fine. This is a simple function, however important, and saves time figuring out where something may be acting funny in a home theatre set-up.

This is a pretty full-featured and capable device. I can’t complain!

Easy to use for camera testing!

I got this to help set up cameras around my home and my parents. It is well made and feels quite durable, I even dropped in by accident in my driveway stones and it barely left a mark. It takes just a few hours to charge and the battery lasted long enough for me to check all of the cameras around my home. The display screen is a nice size and allows me to see what angle and placement is best to provide the greatest view. It is not a touch screen but, the buttons on the side are easy to use and navigate with.

There is a bright light included, great for illuminating if you are working in the evening but, it will drain the battery sooner. The audio comes through the tester sounding exactly the same as my videos I get on my security systems app. This is an excellent way to test functionality, picture quality and audio quality. This camera tester comes with a nice carrying case that allows me to organize the cords and find everything I need quickly.

Very unique and useful tool

This Wsdcam tester is quite useful for a variety of applications. It has inputs for testing just about any type of physical camera connection; including HDMI, VGA, and older style analog inputs using a BNC connector. You could also use this to test or view video from streaming boxes or computers with the HDMI input. There is an LED flashlight on the front, which is helpful if you are in a dark area such as an attic, so you can easily see what you're doing. The feature of this tester that is most amazing is that it also has an RJ45 network port for testing Ethernet cables. So you can use this to troubleshoot just about all of the physical wiring that you might find in a small business (Video cables for security cameras and network cables for computers). Whether you are a professional who does this type of work for others or just a home user who wants to run your own wiring for cameras or computers, this tester is a great addition to your toolkit.
