Great value and twice as nice with a $11.40 wide-angle/macro lens upgrade

After months of agonizing over not having a better microscope and being unable to justify dropping over $600 on a higher-end interchangeable-lens/autofocus camera setup + a Barlow lens, I decided to buy this as it seemed to tick all the boxes for my needs a few of my wants. Overall, I was impressed with the picture quality, but part of me still missed the high-end optics and auto-focus.

Then, thanks to another reviewer (props RCJad!), I decided to add the Xit XT30WAB 30mm 0.43X Wide Angle Lens ($11.40 on Amazon) and it's made the AD407 so much better. The XT30WAB lens brings a slightly wider to see more of the PCB and it has a Depth-of-Field (DoF) of approximately 1 inch/25 mm, making PCB requiring far less refocusing while you work! Now, I can see the PCB *and* my tools, tall components, etc. while I work. Now I can tilt a PCB to inspect it WITHOUT constantly refocusing or shifting the board up and down. I'd still love to have autofocus, but with this DoF, I don't really need/miss it most of the time. (Andonstar - You need to sell these or similar as your own so buyers don't have to research them on their own.)

Keep in mind, even with the additional lens, the AD407 isn't going to compete for with a $600+ microscope with interchangeable lenses, a larger/taller stand and a camera with autofocus, but this is half the cost, a great formfactor for a workbench, has a very nice display built-in and it works really well for all but really large PCBs. Just get a wide-angle/macro lens and you'll enjoy it a whole lot more.

Note: There are also mods that people do mount these cameras to microphone stands/arms to allow you to raise them higher or work on larger PCBs (large motherboards, arcade PCBs, retro computer repair, etc.). It does require some rewiring of the LED lights, however.

Well worth the money!

I'll be honest I was concerned whether or not the extra 70 x zoom would be necessary compared to the other models. Don't think twice and do it. Check my photos, the first job I put this through was straightening bent cpu pins from an eBay motherboard that my friend bought. I don't think I would have made it happen without the extra 70 x zoom. The input to a TV works instantly, and looks fantastic on a 4K TV. The adjustable brightness of the LED lights really helps to see what you're looking at on SMC pads. Now I don't have experience with standard microscopes for repair, but considering after some SMC rework, depth of field is a little bit challenging, but tilting the camera back really helped out a lot. Check my photos and if you are right on the fence about buying it like I was, just go for it. I believe you'll be very happy for the price versus functionality.

Easy to use, only one zoom for each item however

Overall, I am very happy with this product. The picture quality is excellent, the construction sturdy, and learning to use it a breeze. I would certainly purchase from this company again. The only complaint I have is that you do not have a range of magnification options. Although through adjusting the focus and height of the camera tower you can focus well, there is generally only one level of 'zoom' which works for each item. All other combos are completely fuzzy. It is not like a normal microscope where you can see something at 15x or 30x. You play around, and eventually, find the height/focus combo that provides you a clear image.

Great performance at an excellent price

I do a lot of tinkering with electronics. For decades, I’ve relied on my trust 10x eye loupe to inspect part numbers, color codes, solder joints, whatever. Trust me when I say - this digital microscope is the best thing since... well... 10x eye loupes. No more squinting. No more trying to angle the object just right under the desk lamp. This scope just works. The ability to photograph the image for future reference or documentation is just icing on the cake.

If I had one complaint, it would be that the adjustable focal distance is not optimal. I quickly found myself wanting a wider angle of view — the lense allowed it but the vertical travel topped out too soon. I solved this by designing and 3D printing a 87mm spacer and buying two 100mm screws to lift the bracket off the plate enough to fully utilize the entire focus range of the lens. Not a necessary modification by any means, but worthwhile if you have the means and desire.

If you need a stable way to get a good image for your cartridge (or anything else), here it is.

After getting a couple of digital microscopes that either are handheld or have some cheesy base clamp that falls over when you tilt it too far, this is the ticket. I use this to inspect my cartridge stylus condition, cleanliness, and position relative to the record. The picture can be dialed in pretty well, better than the expensive DynoLite I had that was supposed to be so good. You have to do some finagling to be able to get good shots of your cartridge in action on your turntable, but it is possible. Having the rack-and-pinion adjustment makes it easy to focus it, as opposed to those other ones where you have to spin a dial on the body, which messes up your point of focus. You do need to get a mini-SD card to save pictures on, and watch the size, because I think t can only handle one up to 32GB - you should double check that.

I'm impressed!

I have to say that I was skeptical but I am impressed! I repair vintage electronics for a living so its rare that I need a microscope but this one has made those repairs not only possible, but a breeze! If you are like me and don't need the fanciest microscope to get the job done, or if you're a hobbyist, this thing will exceed your expectations. I will say that I don't think the value is there unless you get it on sale like I did. At full price, I probably would've spent the extra $150ish to get a higher end scope.

Great item

I wrote previously that it would only output 640x480 but it appears this was due to my using it with older computer monitors. With a 4k monitor it immediately snapped into 1920x1200 mode with beautiful output.

Excellent microscope with a limited field of view

This thing is great! The recorded video is high quality and the microscope is very user friendly. My one complaint is the very limited field of view. You can only view maybe a 2" square at most. I recommend 3D printing a mount so you can move the microscope further from the object you are viewing. There is a good modle on Thingiverse, thing:5003215. Highly recommend this microscope for kids science and PCB rework!

Great little microscope.

We use this microscope to explore the world around us and are seeing wonderful images. Everything is amazing when you can see it magnified. I'm able to take photos with it and we're having a great time finding out how things look when made BIG.

Perfect for SMD re-work

Came packaged great and in good working order. Perfect for SMD work on PCB's. Was able to quickly spot a bridge that there was no way my eye was gonna see it. I don't honestly solder through it, as much as I use it to check my work. Recommend to anyone doing this kind of work.

Question & Answer

Question :

Does this require an SD card? I can't get it to display without one.

Answer :

Hi, AD407 microscope needs an SD card to take photos and videos. It supports up to 32G cards, and we recommend using class10 high-speed cards.

Question :

Can a battery be added? anyone open it up to see if their are any batt pads on the pcb? any room for a flat 3.7v lithium or 18650?

Answer :

Video could not be loaded

Question :

Does this unit come with an American power supply cord?

Answer :

Thank you for your question. Yes, AD407 is equipped with a power cord and a power adapter adapted to the American voltage specifications.

Question :

Can someone with this check to see if you can focus this from say 12” or so away from the thing you’re looking at? Thanks!

Answer :

Yes, I removed the unit from the stand and raised it as high as I could go, limited by the cable that powers the LEDs. This was about 32 inches and I was able to focus it well. You might be able to go higher if you use an external light source.

Question :

is it just me or does this item seem very overpriced? it's just not that great, though it at least has decent build quality. more like $150 to me

Answer :

It is absolutely, in my experience, not overpriced. When they say this thing zooms in, it ain't no lie. I use it for small component de-soldering, reading the extremely small print on PCBs and components. Also, connecting to your PC is a very useful feature. You can record, view on large monitors, take screenshots. The only things I would change, if it didn't change the capabilities of the camera, would be to increase the vertical travel a little more. The last thing would be to print/etch register lines on the base (which I did myself). Not a big deal, but it makes it easier occasionally. I paid $220 and I would do it again.

Question :

Description says 'the parcel will be shipped from wc', what/where is wc?

Answer :

Hello, friend

Sorry that WC is a mistake.
The parcel will be shipped from Walnut, CA. Thank you!

Question :

How much does the scope weigh? everything but the stand/base. i'd like to mount to a microphone boom i'd like make sure it's not too heavy.

Answer :

Hi. The weight of the AD407 microscope host and power cable without stand/base is about 1.21lb (450g), thank you.

Question :

Does this unit have image flip or image rotate? If not, will the feature be added? Thanks.

Answer :

No. Not a feature that can be added.

Question :

What is the screen resolution?

Answer :

Hi. Please refer to the following detailed parameters: Photo resolution: up to 12M 4032*3024, video output: UHD 2880x2160 24fps; Full HD 1920x1080 60fps/30fps; HD 1280x720 120fps. Thanks.

Question :

Diameter of the scope shaft? I'd like to mount it to an articulating stand.

Answer :

The camera shaft measures 34.86mm, the lower mounting shaft measures 15.63mm. This measurement is using Mitutoyo digital caliper which has been zeroed. I do not have micrometers.
