Buy with confidence.

During the past thirty years I have used step up rings for nearly every camera rig imaginable - including 16 and 35mm film.
Until now, rings have a history of bad machining and causing untold moments of panic.

THIS ring is EXCELLENT ! It is well-made, has mass (not flimsy), comes nicely packaged (though I will put mine in a hard/styrene filter case), and is a well-thought out piece of gear.

I will be looking for other products from this company including other step rings.

If you get one of these and don't like it, I'd like to hear about it. For now I am
thinking that this is start-up company committed to rising to the top and plans on
getting there by making the best gear possible.

— disclaimer: No one gave me free gear to shill for this company/product.
I'm writing because what I paid for exceeded my expectations: something
that rarely happens.

Nice Ring!

Hesitated ordering due to the price being so much higher than aluminum step-up-rings, and not sure it could be that much better. This is a very nice ring. The ring is about three times heavier than the aluminum versions, so still light, and very well made. The biggest plus, and the reason I was even considering this ring, is it doesn't stick like the aluminum rings I have used. In spite of my best efforts, I have had aluminum rings stick to the point I didn't think I would ever get the filter off. A filter wrench didn't even help. Just time and determination. It seemed to just be the risk you took when using them, regardless of brand or price. Looks like this problem has been solved with the Breakthrough Photography ring. I have tried to get this ring stuck, intentionally tightening down a B+W CPL on it, and it comes loose every time, using fingers only, with about the same force used to put it on. No longer will I be running around with filters only partially screwed on.

Surprisingly good step-up ring...

Who knew that a step-up ring could generate so many reviews? Well, there is a reason. These step-up rings do not bind up like other rings. First of all, these rings are brass, which tend not to bind up. But the saving grace on these Breakthroughs are the knurled edge, which gives you purchase when you need to twist the 77mm filter off the adapter ring. I cannot tell you how many times I've seen guys trying to remove filters off adapter rings and then give up and throw the whole thing into their bags. Then have to purchase more adapter rings for other filters. Craziness. Just buy the Breakthrough adapter rings. This adapter ring will not do that. I use the 58mm to 77mm step-up ring for a mid range zoom and filters from my long telephoto primes.

A well made step-up ring that does not bind to the filter!

I ordered this step-up ring in hope to find out if it's really as good as ppl say and if it will solve the binding issue I had with *every single step-up ring* I bought so far.
The short answer is: Yes.
The longer answer:
Usually I make sure I don't screw a filter all the way into a step-up ring, so it's easier to remove it. However, when working with C-PL, I usually end up with the filter getting screwed tighter and tighter as I use it more and more with a step-up ring. The result is that most often than not, I find myself struggling to separate the two, even with filter wrenches.
With this step-up ring, the first thing I did was to take my C-PL filter and screw it all the way in and see if I can unscrew it using my hands. Each time I screwed it tighter and tighter. So far - I have no problems unscrewing the filter, even when it's screwed into the ring as tight as possible.

To sum it up:
This step-up ring is a little heavier than the others I've had, the ridges on it are a great feature as it gives you more grip for separating it from a filter, it's definitely well made, and (most important) it's doing exactly what you expect it to do without the risk of binding with your filters.

High quality Step-Up Ring

These are probably the best adaptor rings you can buy. They are very solid feeling, easy to thread on, and I haven’t had any issues with filters sticking. I also like that you can buy a single ring that jumps multiple sizes without having to attach many cheap feeling rings together to get t the right size. There is no arguing the quality difference of these offer. I have two different sizes, 67-77 and 72-77, and they are both great products. I do have a difficult time justifying the price difference. I had cheaper rings and they liked to stick to filters or together and certainly felt a lot cheaper, but you can by an entire kit of those for a fraction of the price of one of these. If you only need 1-3 sizes, these are worth it.

Excellent manufacturing

Breakthough Photography is the only brand of ND filter (X4 series) that I will purchase because of their quality and lack of color distortion. But lets face it...this is just an 'adapter ring'. And it is expensive. That said, the gnarled edges and quality make up for some of the price. This is a buy once and keep forever product. Plus it matches my existing BP ND filters and doesn't look like a cheap knockoff. So while it is fairly expensive, I highly recommend it. I plan on purchasing additional adapters from them.

Buy This Ring

Breakthrough Photography step-up rings cost about four times the price of the common rings and they are worth every penny. After receiving two new aluminum $6 rings that were bent when I opened the box, I found the Breakthrough CNC cut brass ones, and I have only bought their rings since then. Even if the cheaper aluminum rings were not so flimsy, the threads on the Breakthrough rings are so much smoother it would still be worth the price. The knurled outer edge gives a much better grip than even the Tiffen rings, which are half the price of the Breakthrough rings and still made from aluminum. I have five or six of the Breakthrough rings in different sizes, and they are the only kind I will buy. Of all the instances I know of where you really do get what you pay for, these rings versus the other step-up rings on the market are the most black and white, easily seen difference.

More solid and much smoother to mount and remove than aluminum step-up rings

I am using this step-up ring to more or less permanently mount the Canon 67 Macrolite Adapter to my Sony 90mm G macro lens. Previously, I used an inexpensive aluminum ring, which, while it didn't get stuck, just didn't feel sooth while screwing it on and off, so I did not feel confident in its ability to stay on the lens long term without getting stuck, especially with the load from Canon's ring macro units attached. This brass step-up ring feels so much more solid and smoother to install, and I have no qualms about leaving it and the Canon Macrolite Adapter permanently mounted to the lens, which makes my macro life much, much simpler. Highly recommended.

High quality step up ring. Very rigid. Love it!

I recently got a Nikon Z7 with the 24-70mm 72mm lens. Most of my other lens are 77mm, so I didn't want to purchase 72mm filters. This will allow me to avoid that for the most part. One point that you should be aware of is that some vignetting does occur when the lens is at 24mm setting, this can be expected. Zooming just a little will solve for this effect. If your sensitive to this then you will need to buy the native filters, but I was trying to save money and this ring did that for me. I will certainly buy from Breakthrough again!

Terrific company selling really great products!!!

I purchased this stepup ring from Breakthrough Photography for a couple of reasons. First it is made from brass which gives fewer problems when trying to remove a ring from a lens. the second reason is because I supported Breakthrough photography's kick starter project to develop their X4 circular polarizer. I have been VERY satisfied their CPL as well as VERY satisfied with their customer service after the sale. When I had a problem of uncertain cause with my CPL they replaced it at no cost to me - totally fantastic customer service IMHO. I highly recommend any breakthrough Photography products based upon my experience with this company.

Question & Answer

Question :

What are the benefits of using a larger filter than lens size? I have 2, 77 mm lenses and a Nikon 14-24. Looking for options😊

Answer :

The main reason to use a larger filter than the lens is designed for is so you only need one size of filter and can share them between lenses, such as one good CPL Filter instead of getting one for every lens you have.
Since both your lenses that accept filters are 77mm I would just get 77mm filters.

Question :

Will this work as adapter for an 18-55 mm Canon Rebel to a 58 mm .43 wide angle lens?

Answer :

The 18-55 has a filter thread of 58mm. The adapter would allow you to place a 72mm filter on the lens.
I’m not sure why you’d want to place an auxiliary wide angle on an ultra-wide zoom. Am I not understanding what you’re trying to do?

Question :

Will I get black areas if I put my 49mm in to my 67mm?

Answer :

I f you reduce the lens aperture from 67mm down to 49mm you will have severe vignette, it will cause shadows, and a definite reduced view for the sensor.
If you look through a a pipe that is 2 inches wide then look through a pipe that is 1 and a half inches wide the reduced picture you see is similar to your question, hope this helps.

Question :

Can i use this with the polar pro variable nd?

Answer :

Yes you can as long as you match the proper thread size on your lens and the variable nd

Question :

I've been searching to find a graduated ND filter offered by you, but don't see one. Is there a dirty secret to those types of filters?

Answer :

The effectiveness and appearance of a graduated or color ND filter depends greatly on the focal length of the lens behind it. Nowadays I highly recommend doing this in post using a linear gradient in Lightroom or your favorite tool unless for some reason you must do it in camera. With a telephoto lens you may find that there is no useful graduated effect. With a wide angle lens the graduated effect may appear too abrupt. I'm not sure what "streaks" refers to though.

Question :

Can I stack 2 of these filters on each other? I want to use the 46mm to 52mm ring, then add the 52mm to 82mm ring for 46mm lens to 82mm filter set up

Answer :

Vignetting from step up rings is highly unusual even in the case of wide angle lenses. Normally a wide angle lens with a focal length is so short that vignetting might be an issue will have an internal filter slot (unusual these days) or fixed petal hood with no filter threads (typical). Step up rings are generally thin, on the order of thin filters on each "side." There won't be any vignetting even if you stack two or three or five step up rings. If used with wide angle lenses you can get half thickness filters, which are generally high quality anyway (might as well get them regardless of the application) to avoid vignetting in all cases. 35mm equivalent and up lenses, or, really, probably 28 mm and up, will not experience vignetting when used with step up rings and/or thin filters. However, very wide angle lenses stopped down to f/16 or less might reveal dust or scratches on filters, particularly the farther they are from the objective of the lens. Of course in that case dust on the sensor will probably be more of a problem. Anyway, I wouldn't put vignetting high on my list of things to worry about. Hope this is helpful.

Question :

Is there one step up ring to rule them all, and in the darkness bind them?

Answer :

😄😄😄

Question :

Will this 52-62 step up ring adapter work for a nikon coolpix p600? purchased another brand w/ threads on the 52mm side too narrow for the nikon lens.

Answer :

If it's indeed a 52mm thread size then this will work. If in doubt, I would email Breakthrough Photography

Question :

Hi, i have a 77mm tiffen filter and i would like to fit this filter on my 67mm filter thread size lens. is this the right product?

Answer :

Yes, this 67 to 77 step up ring will work

Question :

Will this cause vignetting on wide angle lenses?

Answer :

There should be no vignetting issues unless it's a really wide angle. it fits the size of the lens to a larger filter, so the dark rink is on the outside on the lens. It works just fine on my 18-55. It would not work on my 10-24 wide angle lens because the lens itself bubbles out, so no screw on filter will fit on it.
